Q&A with EE FB Graeme Bell

Q&A with EE FB Graeme Bell from cfl.ca

    January 20, 2010

EDMONTON -- The Eskimo players and coaches are now on a bit of a hiatus while they rest up and get ready for the 2010 season. As dreams of Grey Cup Championship rings dance through their heads, they all have different things planned for the next several months.

We had a chance to sit down with Eskimo fullback Graeme Bell to see how he plans to spend this off-season.

Q: What is the first thing you do when the season ends?
A: The first thing I do is actually try to figure out what I will do because the regular schedule stops so suddenly when the season ends. It's a big shock to not have football anymore. I usually go back to my old off-season job marketing a Hotel and Pub in Saskatoon, which I do a small bit during the season.

Q: How is your fourth off-season going to differ from the previous three?
A: Every year you learn what works and what doesn't work for training in the off-season. After your 4th year you've almost fine-tuned it; however there is always something different. This year I've learned what I need to work on technically on the field, so that will be one focus this off-season. This off-season has changed a bit already; going be living in Edmonton.

Q: How does a typical fullback train in the off-season?
A: Fullbacks have a tough position. They need to be big enough and technically sound to block D-lineman and linebackers but have to be agile and quick enough to elude defensive backs. I plan to train functionally to be as quick as I can at a functional weight. Personally I use a split between weights, agility, yoga, and a skipping routine.

Q: We've noticed, since you joined the Eskimos last February, you are very involved in the community. How do you plan to maintain that throughout the off season?
A: I plan on maintaining my involvement with the Big Buddy system through the Big Brothers and Big Sister Club. I'll also spend my off time helping kids and speaking to them about bullying, the benefits of sport and school though the Stay in School Program, and I'll work with inner city kids in the community.

Q: What are the five things you need to do before training camp starts in June?
A: The things I want to do before training camp are...

    1. Contact George Clooney and ask how he keeps his salt and pepper hair ... worried about mine going all grey
    2. Prepare physically and mentally for the upcoming season
    3. Learn the back roads of Edmonton because traffic moves way too slow on main roads
    4. Find a place for 'Oceans 3' to live again (Scott Gordon, Elliott Richardson and me)
    5. Find the best restaurants in Edmonton to eat
    6. Buy Scott Gordon a baby gift for his first child and buy height pills for Elliott Richardson
    7. Find cleats that will make me faster
    8. Go to work with Chris Czieki for a day

Agreed. Fullback is the best position. IMO the second best would be MLB, but I am sure not everyone would agree.

hmmm... I'm wondering what a certain poster who wore #77 is going to have to say about that! At least mud tried to save himself ... a bit!

I just like fullback because you get to do a bit of everything. You get to hit guys, block, catch passes, running plays, and possibly throw on trick plays. MLB is pretty cool too. Sacking the QB is one of the best plays and is so fun it is hard to believe it is legal.

That is just me though. Different strokes for different folks.
