    Esks add to offence

(Edmonton) The Edmonton Eskimos have signed import offensive linemen Clifford Louis (pronounced Lewis) and Jeremy Parquet and import wide receiver Rudy Burgess, the club announced today.

Originally signed as an undrafted free agent with the Cleveland Browns in May 2007, Louis has spent time on the practice rosters of the Browns, the New York Giants and the Jacksonville Jaguars. Most recently the Morgan State grad attended training camp with the Florida Tuskers of the United Football League. He was released on September 29, 2009.

Drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs in the seventh round (238th overall) in the 2005 NFL Draft, Parquet has been on the rosters of the Hamburg Sea Devils of the NFLE (2006), the NFLs St. Louis Rams (2007) and the Pittsburgh Steelers (2008). The New Orleans native made his NFL debut in the 2008 season in reserve action and went on to win Super Bowl XLIII with the Steelers. He most recently spent a season in the UFL with the Las Vegas Locomotives.

The Brooklyn, New York native Burgess was originally signed as an undrafted free agent with the Indianapolis Colts in 2008 and spent time during training camp and pre-season with both the Colts and the New York Jets. The Arizona State product was signed to a practice roster agreement with the Chicago Bears in November 2008 and was waived in September 2009.

    Overview

Positives … Has impressive size, long arms, solid midsection, big bubble and a frame that can add more bulk … Carries his weight well and shows good short area explosion … Will compensate for his heavy feet by taking proper angles to neutralize linebackers at the second level … Flashes quickness and agility working in space … Plays until the whistle and is a smart player who is alert to games and stunts … Works to finish blockers when working in-line … Has adequate pop to reestablish position at the line of scrimmage … Can position or drive block with equal efficiency for the ground game … Uses his size well and shows a good kick slide in pass protection … Has the lateral quickness and change of direction agility to make blocks in space … Plays with a nasty, aggressive nature and is very adept at maintaining balance working in tight areas … Displays the foot balance to hold his own vs. the edge rush … Even with his wind-up hand punch (a little weak), his long arms allow him to deliver the reach blocks and make it tough for defensive ends attempting to turn the corner … Shows good body control redirecting in-line and could see time at guard at the next level due to his trap blocking ability … Mentally tough blocker who reacts well to the defender's stunts and is very effective using his size to clear out the rush lanes.

Negatives … Has narrow shoulders and small bone structure … Little stiff in the hips and struggles to bring his feet when on the move … Rarely lunges or overextends, but does wind up a bit with his hands before making contact … Is not what you'd consider a workout warrior in the weight room, but has made improvements in his work habits … Has a tendency to let his feet die after generating a quick initial burst off the ball … Hesitates before making contact and gets too erect in his stance at times, resulting in him getting pushed back vs. a strong bull rush … Gets good hand placement, but fails to deliver much power behind his punch … Has good lateral agility, but seems very reluctant to move his feet at times … Tends to get lazy in the off season and not only needs to be monitored, he must also develop better overall strength.

He sounds okay although he may be a project which is usually a bad thing for an Import O-Lineman.

only info on Raymond Burgess was he was in a Bar fight with a team mate and subsequently released by the steelers.

Not over excited about the signings.
I guess we'll have to see what training camp brings.

                Who, who and who????

None of these stand out, but that's what camp is all about!

                  Re: Offensive Signings

what I can't get over is how every year people hear about signings, know that many are training camp fodder, some are there just for a look see (could be diamonds in the rough), or are there to take some reps so the starters can focus on the upcoming season. Yet every year people seem to think that every signing is supposed to be a blockbuster, or that the GM doing the signing is a doofus for signing no-names. (Not that we're seeing a lot of that sentiment here, thankfully, but it's certainly present elsewhere.)

BTW... the guy who wore #42 for years and was arguably the greatest MLB in the league ever was pretty much a no-name coming into TC. Ditto for the guy wearing #15 now.
                  Turf Toe:
                  - "...turf toe is a common malady that is more of a nuisance than a serious injury."
                  - "Turf toe can often progress into a chronic problem..."
                  - "A mild instance of turf toe (grade 1) can be merely aggravating while a serious case (grade 3) can be debilitating."

                    Re: Offensive Signings

Every year one or two of these no names jumps up and earns a spot that no one thought about before hand.

One of the reasons I like to get out to rookie camp and get a sneak peek at some of the new blood before main camp opens.

I'll only get a chance to sneek a peak at rookie camp and the first days of main camp. I'm in NOLA for that first full week of camp this year

                        Re: Offensive Signings

So with these latest offensive signings, I got to wondering if the Esks were going to bring in another QB for camp to maybe push Maas for a role on the team. I know we have three QB's already but Maas isn't getting younger and neither is Ricky for that matter.

Do you guys see the Esks bringing in another QB or two for camp?

                          Re: Offensive Signings

always 4 QBs minimum for camp. I suspect Maas will play out his contract though so its unlikely any new kid will stick this year.

I can tell you that the quarterback prospects were pretty bleak at the Long Beach open tryout. I would be very shocked if anybody from the Long Beach tryout made the trip north to Eskimo rookie camp. Actually the best arm at the tryout was current Eskimo defensive back Jason Goss !!!
