    Defensive signings

Eskimos add former NFL’ers Dalton and Scott to defense

(Edmonton) The Edmonton Eskimos announced the signing of linebacker Antico Dalton and defensive lineman Cedric Scott today.

Dalton was originally drafted in the sixth round of the 1999 NFL Draft by the Minnesota Vikings (199th overall). He was released by Minnesota in August 2000 and signed by the New England Patriots in December that year. He appeared in three games for the Pats and was then released. In 2002, Dalton signed with the Atlanta Falcons and was assigned to Berlin of NFL Europe. He was released by the Falcons in June of 2002.

Scott was originally drafted by the New York Giants in the fourth round (114th overall) of the 2001 NFL Draft. He played in nine games as a rookie and missed seven with a fractured hand. Scott was signed by the Cleveland Browns in November of 2002 and appeared in four regular season games on special teams and as a backup defensive end. He was released by the Browns in August 2003 then re-signed by the Browns as a free agent January 2004 and allocated to NFL Europe. He was released by the Browns again in September of 2004.

Guess my ranting & ravings yesterday didn't take long to get to PJ's office! I was waiting for PJ to find some NFL-calibre DL help to bring up here for camp, and I'm hoping they aren't stopping here.
Both of these guys are under 30, which definately makes us younger on that side of the ball as well. I especially feel that both Cedric & Antico will help us out getting to the QB - they are both big & pretty fast for each guys' respective position. Dalton brings some amazing strength (his draft combine numbers were unreal), size & speed to the LB position, while Scott had this write up during his draft year:

Cedric Scott was Southern Mississippi's best player a year ago. He wasn't receiving a whole lot of NFL attention during the year but a good postseason has been pushing up draft boards.
Scott is very active and has good speed off the end. Scott is different from many other Ends in that he is well rounded, being that he can play the run and pass well.
BOTTOM LINE: Scott is a very good prospect. He is a good athlete and as complete an End as there is in this draft.
      PROJECTION: Early to Late 2nd

And another write up by an NFL scout on Scott:
A fifth-year senior, who was a two-year starter...All-Conference USA pick last year and Co-Defensive Player of the Year...In two years as a starter, he had 119 tackles, 33 tackles for loss and 16 sacks — 12 of those coming last year...Excellent at batting down passes because of long arms...Played his best at the Senior Bowl against the top OT’s in the college game...Ran a 4.75 at the Combine, along with 23 reps and a 35-1/2 inch vertical jump.

              Re: Defensive signings

What is going on here...??? I was under the impression that the Eskimos could not announce any more signings because they had the maximum number of bodies invited to camp? How do these signings get announced while one like Wiltshire is never really announced...??????

To me it was never about what I accomplished on the football field, it was about the way I played the game.

Perhaps they were already signed and accounted for and it's being made public now?

                      Re: Defensive signings

I'm glad we have a speedy guy on the end with the QB's in the west being so fast (except for winnipeg). I also found that when Calgary almost beat BC they got a couple good shots on printers early and he didnt play as well.

No QB likes being hit early.

Nice to see Edmonton bring in some import help for the defence. Hopefully they grab a few more guys to compete for spots in training camp.

Does anyone have any further word on these two guys? Any chance one of them starts? Cedric Scott sounds like a pretty big guy and he could certainly add some size to our d-line...

                              Re: Defensive signings

I'd be willing to say that Dalton would immediately be ahead of Spender, Jarrett, & Zardo on the depth chart, and will likely push Young & Wilson for their spots in camp. He has very good speed and better LB size than most of what we have, but that is what TC is for - may the best man win.
As for Scott, I could definately see him spending splitting some time on the outside with Jeanty. I would forward that Fleiszer & Charbonneau have spots tied up, and Jeanty as well. If Cedric shows the ability to get pressure on a consistent basis, however, there is always a chance he could possibly fit in inside at a tackle spot just due to his athletic ability & sheer size.
