Re: GM 4 Esks @ CGY Stats - Jul 23/11

Not our best game by any stretch...a bit lucky to get out of there with the win.

Running game: Was not as involved (especially early) as in recent weeks IMO...and IMO we suffered for it later. Whitlock had a decent game on the ground, though. He should stay in next week, I figure.

Passing game: Was obviously bad. RR did not seem on the same page with anyone (save for Stamps). He was missing Henry on the sideline numerous times - just by a yard or two. I don't put much if any of that on Henry because to catch the ball he would've had to have been out of bounds. RR had some time at points but didn't seem to use it well. I don't blame him much for the pick, from my seats was looking right down the throwing lane to Scott (IIRC) and it was open. And curses, Whitlock.

Playcalling: Did not seem nearly as aggressive as in past games...especially in about the 3rd, when RR reverted back to short checkdowns etc (and even they weren't there as much). Crandell has some work to do now. Didn't control the ball and/or the game...we're usually on the other end of similar TOP.

Protection: 1 sack allowed, not bad.

Receivers: Hope Bowman is okay, and hope Nowacki gets back in soon. The golden boy sat out again, he'll probably draw back in next game. Coehoorn wasn't really involved (not his fault). Henry had a tough day on the sideline. But that one-hander by Stamps almost makes up for the rest of the unit by itself.

Pressure: Can we PLEASE PUT THE BLOODY QB ON THE GROUND. I don't know how many times we were in the backfield and let Burris or an RB get away, even when we got hands on him. 3 sacks isn't bad, but it could've been probably double that.

Run defence: We got run on...not to a horrible degree, but we did. Cornish made us look really bad on that one run.

Pass defence: They weren't too bad, IMO, at least not 372 yds bad...CGY just did a good job of finding the holes. Granted, we did leave them those holes at times. Need to wrap up, too (and that goes for the whole defence).

ST's: Fisher was decent returning, Whitlock had the one decent return. Coverage was fairly good. Very good game for Duval, he deserves credit.

Penalties: Stupid, stupid, stupid. 4 unnecessary roughness calls against? 2 on Ramsay (who ought to be benched for it IMO). Objectionable conduct on Messam? There best be a fine system in place and it had best be significant. 3rd game in a row where over half our yardage is made up of absolutely needless calls to take.
I don't even mind the offside/procedure/no yds, or the odd holding/PI/accidental face mask etc. Those are penalties committed in making an effort. But thoughtless/preparation penalties (UR after the play, objectionable, too many men, time counts, etc.) are completely useless.

Hijinks: How funny is this - the Stamps' in-stadium "Make Some Noise for the Defence" scoreboard prompt (ridiculous in itself) is sponsored by the Calgary Public Library. (tm)

We've heard stubler say he is looking for 19 points against us a game, and we have heard kavis say, if they score 20, we have to score 21....

This was one of those games...

IMHO Calgary deserves credit as their ht changes were significant,

But I'll take 5 point road wins over getting 50 point ass ****ings any day!

I think if you could break down the stats by half, you'd see two different ball games. It means -- to me -- that Crandall will have to be extra diligent in making up his game plan for the labour day double-dip, as they seemed to figure us out after half time and I hope we can give them a whole bunch of new wrinkles to look at!

I agree with the majority; I'd rather win ugly than lose pretty (or how we played them last year!)

We used to find ways to lose games but now were finding ways to win em. Its nice what good coaching can do for a group.
