The organization trades William Loftus to Edmonton for Vaughn and a sixth-round draft pick

Montreal, Apr. 28, 2005 - Montreal Alouettes Vice-President and General Manager Jim Popp is pleased to announce the organization acquired All-Star receiver Terry Vaughn and the Edmonton Eskimos' sixth-round draft pick in today's draft (receiver Adam Eckert) for free safety William Loftus.

« Terry Vaughn is a receiver who can have a direct impact on the outcome of a game, » said Jim Popp. « This is an excellent acquisition for our offence and for our entire team. »

Vaughn (5'8'', 175 lbs.) will begin his eleventh season in the CFL. He was selected on his division's All-Star team in eight consecutive seasons (1996-2003) and on the CFL All-Star team in 1998, 2001 and 2002. In 2001, he led the CFL in receptions and receiving yards. He also holds the CFL record with ten seasons of at least 1000 receiving yards.

Esks trade Terry Vaughn and draft pick for Al’s Loftus

(Edmonton) – The Edmonton Eskimos have traded slot back Terry Vaughn and their sixth round selection (49th overall) in the 2005 Canadian College Draft to the Montreal Alouettes for safety William Loftus.

Vaughn, who signed with Edmonton in 1999 after four seasons in Calgary (’95-’98), leaves second on the Eskimos’ career receiving list with 545 receptions and 7681 yards. He is also the Eskimo record holder or is tied in numerous categories including receptions in a season (106), consecutive seasons with 1000+ receiving yards (6), and receiving yards in a game (275).

In 2004, Vaughn led the Eskimos with 78 receptions and was second in receiving yards with 1062 and added two touchdowns. He also set a new CFL standard in 2004 going over the 1000-yard receiving mark for the 10th consecutive year.

Loftus, a 7-year CFL veteran was the Alouettes’ third round choice (18th overall) in the 1998 Canadian College draft. The Vancouver, B.C. native turns 30 in June and has appeared in 111 games chalking-up 164 defensive tackles, 74 special teams tackles and eight interceptions. While at the University of Manitoba, Loftus was named All-Canadian in 1995 and was selected to the CWUAA (Canada West) All-Star team from 1994 to 1996.

Unless the team is eager to dump him and his fat contract, which is disappointing. What can others tell us about Loftus, more than what has been reported here? Age? Has he been an all-star? Details please?

We gave up Terry Vaughn for a player we had absolutly NO need for whatsoever!!!?!?!? and a draft pick on top of it? What the ****! The pencil-necked front office mother-****ers!!! GAAAAAAAAAAA!!!! This is insane. First Coach hires crummy coaches and leaves our defence in the hands of an incompetent fool, then this?!! I want Higgins back!

Ok, calmer, but this is just dumb. Why for a safety that we have no need for? Why for a guy who might not even make the team plus we lose a draft pick? This has to be the dumbest trade I've seen in a long time.

This is s**t. They just improved the Als..one of the EE's biggest rivals. If no one wanted to take on TV's salary then they should of just kept him and made it work.

I agree......right now this just bloody well reeks of sharing the wealth with the the poor again.......seems every so often we do something like this that we don't have to do....

Esk were not drawing what they wanted for TV an they took the best they could get, Loftus asked the Als to trade him, you get a good player.

Regardless of our record this upcoming season, we need a housecleaning at the Eskimos office beyond support staff (who do a great job by the way). I'm sick of being pissed off all the time. Let's start with anyone whose last name is Campbell.

perhaps he is a good player.....but he plays in the spot where we were putting Whiltshire (or so I thought).....????.........what is the motivation?
