Stop using a 3 man rush!!

For the past 10 years the Esks always have a 3 man rush in their defensive setup and tonight with a competent QB, that killed them. Even with 12 guys back Cavillio can complete a pass with no pressure.

I advocate never using a 3 man rush forever unless you are protecting a 40 point lead with 2 minutes left in the game.
If we were put on this earth to help others, what were the others put on earth for?

Hard to argue.... he killed us in zone or man coverage! We had NO PUSH up the middle what so ever and it just killed us not getting into his passing lanes. He has the quickest release in the league and when he gets into a rythm like he did tonight he will simply shred the opposing team!

3-man rush ain't necessarily a problem; you just have to have the right three men to pull it off...

Make that the right four men...

It all starts with the coach...
When arguing with an idiot, make sure he's not doing the same!

Differt story if it's Laurant or Sewell at nose, but it was highly ineffective tonight. We also saw it far more in this game than any of those previous, or so it seemed.

In theory a 3 man rush is supposed to give you better coverage but with an accurate quick release QB it is useless.

If you have at least 4 and a good push you have a better chance of pressuring the QB or knocking the ball down. 3 men cannot block enough of the passing lanes the QB has to see and gives him tons of time to pass.

That is more of a trade off in favour of the QB than the defence and outweighs the cover advantage.

A 3 man rush against AC in the red zone is the equivalent of conceding a touchdown. Nelson called it twice with the same result.

When the Esks got closer to the red zone, the Als brought extra bodies and we settled for FG attempts and punts.

Having observed the Esks for over 4 decades, the 3 man rush has rarely been effective and has resulted in opposition TD's many times.

That same 3 man rush was used in the Rider game and it gave us the extra LB to force the fumble on Dressler. That was a huge turnover for the Esks in that game.

While it is true that calling the 3-4 should be used sparingly the 4 - 3 was largely ineffective last night. The Als O-Line was much better than the the Esks D-Line especially inside. We need Sewell and Laurent back ... Legare had a tough game.
Some people think football is a matter of life and death. I assure you, it's much more serious than that.

I thought this would happen.. with no pass rush to speak up AC would rip us a new one. Without Ted Larent , Sewell and Howard the line is crap.

The 3-man rush seemed to work well against US last night.. Tons of pressure and at least one sack.

As a defensive co-ordinator in minor/jr. football, I do not use a three man rush nor do I like it that much, I will take the risk of a pass being completed, but I always want the QB under pressure, interceptions happen that way... and I play out of either the 3-5(with the three inside linebackers blitzing on first and second down) - the 4-2 or the 46 and the double eagle flex, which is constant 5 man pressure.

We face alot of teams who play 3-5 here.. It's a bitch to throw on..

See alot of 3-3 stack and 3-5

I'm glad someone in the know agrees with me. You can line up with 3 but at least rush 4 at all times. Monteal under Matthews used to blitz almost all the time. It was a gamble but he had the personnel to do it.

Too bad Edmonton got so many injuries on the D-line. It was bound to catch up with them.

Yes, Calvillio is an excellent QB. We never seem to beat him as he gets the ball away so quickly and knows where the open man will be in all situations as well.

The three man rush has its place in the defensive playbook, but you should never give the QB a pre-snap read of only a three man front. The defense should line up with at least 1 LB on the line and then drop them off after the snap. While there are more defenders in coverage, that is offset by the time the QB will likely have to throw the ball. When I was a DC at the minor level, I used to use the three man rush in 2nd and long which is great because at that level, you do not have any Anthony Calvillo's playing against you

To me it was never about what I accomplished on the football field, it was about the way I played the game.
