    Maas puts health first

    Maas puts health first

QB concentrating on rehabbing shoulder not Ray rumours
By PERRY LEFKO -- Toronto Sun

Jason Maas is more concerned about his health than Ricky Ray.

Maas, the starting quarterback for the Edmonton Eskimos last season, is not medically cleared to play football following off-season surgery on his throwing shoulder. He attended but did not compete in the Damon Allen Quarterback Challenge in support of the Kids Help Phone yesterday at York University.

"I'm still throwing and stuff, but I fear coming out here and trying to pump it up," Maas said.

Winnipeg's Spergon Wynn took the competition winning two of four events. Teammate Kevin Glenn and Saskatchewan's Nealon Greene each won one event. Greene won the longest throw, heaving it 73 yards.

With two weeks to go before training camp, Maas figured he's close to 75% fully recovered in his rehabilitation.

"I'll progressively get it better," he said. "I'll be close during camp. I'll be able to make all the throws, just not with the same velocity that I normally do. It's going to take some time, but I'll be alright."

Maas is aware that Ricky Ray, who replaced him as the Eskimos' starter midway through the 2002 season and all the way through 2003, is considering a return to the Canadian Football League after a season in the National Football League with the New York Jets. The Eskimos attempted unsuccessfully to sign Ray to a long-term deal in 2003, offering him about $300,000 a season, but he wanted to try the NFL.

Ray asked for his release earlier this month, realizing he didn't have a realistic chance to play with the Jets and is now surveying the football landscape. The Eskimos, along with the Argos, are believed to be the two teams in the CFL that will make him the best offer, and Edmonton offers familiarity.

"It's a good fit for him, but financially whether Edmonton comes up with as good an offer, it's hard to say," Maas said.

He and his agent reportedly are looking for an offer similar to B.C.'s Dave Dickenson, who is the highest-paid player in the league at roughly $450,000 a season. If Ray signs with Edmonton it impacts Maas, notwithstanding how well his shoulder holds up.

"If they're going to pay him what's reported, it's hard to sit a guy like that on the bench," Maas said. "I'll have to deal with it, but until then I'm just worried about getting ready for camp and getting healthy. If I have to compete, I have to compete. It will be up to Edmonton whether I do that or not."

Rumours persist that if the Eskimos sign Ray, they will trade Maas, likely East to either Hamilton or Toronto.

    NO WORRIES

Hamilton starting quarterback Danny McManus isn't too concerned about the Tiger-Cats' pursuit of other pivots.

"The only thing you can control is what happens on the field," McManus said.

They made a pitch for Doug Flutie, who signed with the New England Patriots, and are interested in Ray, although sources indicate they have concerns about the cost.

The more I think about it, the more I believe that if Ray does return to the CFL, his home will be Edmonton. Now, I'm not being overly optimistic or anything, especially because I would have been content with Maas as our QB this season. However, the one factor that stands out the most is Maas' questionable health. If he'll only be "close" by training camp, and as a result, may not participate as much, then how many regular season games will it take him to shake out the rust? Depending on how bad Maas' situation is, the Eskimos will most likely do anything in their power to obtain Ray, should he become available. Also, now that Hamilton has supposedly lost interest and the Argos seem set on having Damon as their starter, then the choice should be pretty clear, especially given RR's familiarity with the offence.

The other thing I noticed in the article is Maas' implication that he'll compete if Ricky comes up here. Being the competitor that Jason is, it's unlikely that he'll just ask for his release if the Esks sign Ricky. Many of you believed that Jason would be traded, but I'm beginning to believe that Khari will be the odd man out. Of course, this is all based on the assumption that Ricky does come here.

I think the Argos are alot more interested in Ray than they are letting on. Allen is ALL they have right now, and hes gonna be gone soon. It doesnt look like Bishop will be back, they need Ray, they know it. Its a two horse race, and as we saw with the Argos, they have alot of bargaining power.

No kidding, I thought he was very close to being 100%, only a couple weeks left. All along I have not been concerned about Maas because the surgery was done a long time ago. Now however there is a worry.

I had the same surgery on my shoulder in September that Maas had in December, and I'm not surprised that Maas isn't 100%. I can only speak of my own situation but while there isn't much pain anymore (although there is often alot of discomfort), my shoulder isn't anywhere near to being fully healed. My own physiotherapist warned me to expect pain and discomfort for another year or so as that is how long I can expect it to take to be fully recovered from the surgery.
The good news for Esks fans is that Maas is younger than me, has access to better training and rehab facilities than I do, and is stronger and healthier than me (marginally ).

75% is just sub par, I hope Cambell is announcing a press conference this week to announce Frito Ray coming home.
My 2 favourite teams are the esks and whoevers playin the stamps!!!

No kidding. 75% won't cut it, and its a big risk that he'll just hurt it in camp again. KJ has the same problem. I really don't see Ray going anywhere in the CFL except here with all honesty. Hamiltion has dropped out, and I think that the situation with Avery and Ray is significantly different. Avery only played a year here, not to mention that RB is not a position where knowing the rest of the team is that important. Ray still knows our coach and a good 70% of the team. It would be easier to regain familiarity here, and he'd almost be assured a starting job. Toronto, feinting or not, is not showing him that kind of support. IMO, our team is demonstating a signifant need at QB, not due to talent, but due to injury. These kinds of problems are very worrisome of they occur even before the season starts. What happens when they start taking hits again?

                  Re: Maas puts health first

I read an article in the calgary sun today that made it seem like Toronto was walkin on egg sheels when it came to the Ray situation because they didnt want to offend the "legend" Damon Allen. (which im guessin just means that all the negotiations will be oevr the phone or behing closed doors). So its tough to tell how aggressive the Argos are dealing with Ray.

Well after reading what I have about Maas, then maybe it wouldnt be such a bad thing afterall to have Ricky Ray. Id still prefer Maas though.

That's my thought process as well. I'd feel pretty confident with a healthy or at least 95% Maas but 75% isn't very good.

If Toronto wants him so badly, then they should give him precedence over Allen for the starting job. Otherwise, he'll go elsewhere, since if he was Damon's backup in TO, he'd be doing the same thing in the CFL this year as he did last year with the Jets which makes no sense whatsoever.

May not to the extent of back-upness that he was with the Jets but I can see no way the guys signs without at least a shot at the starting role.....To take a seat behind Allen at this point would be ignorant of the Argos to do as well....
