Ricky Ray 'one of us' says Hervey

Ricky Ray 'one of us' says Hervey

    GERRY PRINCE, EDMONTON SUN

The Edmonton Eskimos brass was all smiles after sewing up quarterback Ricky Ray for three seasons plus an option for a fourth yesterday.

Members of the Green and Gold were equally happy with the signing.

"Ricky is one of us, he's truly an Eskimo," smiled wide receiver Ed Hervey, on hand for the announcement. "It's all the positives you can go with for this signing.

"When he left for the (New York) Jets (following the 2003 season) he received all of our blessings. We knew it was an opportunity he had to take.

"We all knew that if he were ever to come back to the CFL, Edmonton would be his first choice."

Jason Tucker was one of Ray's favourite targets during Edmonton's Grey Cup win over the Montreal Alouettes in 2003 and the game's MVP.

Tucker was also on the receiving end of several tosses from Ray during the former snack truck driver's rookie CFL campaign in '02.

"He's a good quarterback to have, me and him connected up in the Grey Cup," Tucker said. "It's going to be interesting with all the good quarterbacks we've got now."

With Ray, incumbent starter Jason Maas and former CFL most outstanding player award winner Khari Jones under contract, Edmonton has a formidable 1-2-3 punch when it comes to experienced pivots.

Offensive lineman Kevin Lefsrud joined the Esks from Montreal in time for the '03 Cup march.

Lefsrud remains impressed with Ray's ability to remain cool under pressure.

"(Ray's) got that 'it'," the lineman offered. "Maas is a helluva quarterback. It's going to be nice to have both of them.

"I've never played with Khari and he's a different style of quarterback altogether. Having those three guys would be pretty special."

Saw that one on Slam this AM.......

I don;t think that his acceptance back onto the team was an issue IMO...Most of these guys know what he can bring to the table.....

Thats what coach said, but Maas sounded like he may not. Said he is still having some "problems" with his throwing. Said his arm felt good but he was a bit tentative with his throws. Said he would wait till it all came back before he would play.

I think you have to take that comment in a figurative sense rather than literal. It is a symbolic gesture by DM saying that Maas, as last year's starter, is going to be given the chance to compete for the position.

I'd also like to think that if you go deeper into the comment it means that the Esks don't have the desire to shop him around for a trade at this time. A sentiment shared by Maas himself.

As I mentioned in a different thread, it wouldn't surprise me that while Maas would suit up for preseason games, watch him get shifted to the 9 game inj list. By mid season some one will need a replacement QB (exit Khari Jones) and Maas will be re-activated.

If not, then Maas will do as he suggested... look for something different for '06;.

I don't think JM is 100% yet.....and with the wealth of QB talent we have right now, there is no need to rush JM back, for everyones sake and JM especially long term the worst thing to happen is to reagrivate anything right now. The deck will have some shuffling done and when JM is healthy and ready to go, he will still be an Eskimo in 2005....

I thought he already had a contract... is this maybe a 'reworked' contract ... something that JM built into his previous contract in case of this exact RR situation?

                  At training camp.

Ray will be taking the last at training camp and the first in the regular season. I am certain of it.

Four years plus and option. He signed it at the end of last season.
