Is it safe to say that Brock Ralph has beaten out Winston October Scott Robinson as the Esks 5th receiver? I know on the esks website it list Ralph behind Mookie as a WR. But in watching the first two games I have seen a lot of Ralph and have yet to see Robinson or October on offense. Before the season I wasn't sure if the guy was even going to make the team, but with his speed I wouldn't be surprised to see him with the fourth leading receiver yardage wise. I just think that Mookie is over the hill and going to run out of gas by Labor Day.

Re: Receiving corps
Robinson has been bothered by a sore achilles. October is a returner forst and foremost. Ralph has simply been in the right place at the right time.
I am not a huge Ralph fan. Ralph is physically gifted with speed to spare and great hands but he lacks courage across the middle in big games. IMO Robinson is more physical as a run blocker and has hands as good as Ralph and is a better special teams player.
I hope Ralph proves me wrong, he is a quality guy with a great work ethic. If he improves upon his weaknesses the Eskimo offense will benefit.
To me that is the bottom line.

Re: Receiving corps
Robinson also suffered a mild concussion last week in a accident, did he not ?
I don't Mookie is going to run out of gas anytime soon, a change of scenery can rejuvinate a person.
If October isn't used as a 5th reciever, and he contines to bomb out on returning, then why not give landry a shot ?

I thought i remembering reading he ran a faster 40 than Hervey
Landry's 40 as been timed at 4.22 seconds.Last edited by Esks4ever; 06-29-2004, 11:25 AM.

Re: Receiving corps
Sorry I about not putting the question icon up...I am new to the whole message board.
The two intengiables I think that Ralph has going for him are his speed and height. I wouldn't mind seeing a Ralph put on a few more pounds. It just might help him feel a little more comfortable going over the middle, which is the big knock on him right now and something that he needs to shed.
Although I think that Landry could be a step up from the way october is playing, our real problem is D. That is where we need to make changes and shake things up.

Re: Receiving corps
I'd like to see Landry, too, but the coaching staff seem complacent to have October still returning punts and kickoffs. Although, to be honest, I thought that October had a better game against BC, especially since he was breaking some tackles rather than being wrapped up by the first man. Maybe Higgins lit a fire under him, who knows?Originally posted by Crimson KnightI'd like to see this Landry guy.. I haven't seen nearly enough of him. Actually... I've barely seen any of him. Re: Receiving corps
Don't forget he's also a pretty decent receiver; if we happen to have any injury problems there this year, he could end up making a substantial contribution there as well.Originally posted by BeerfishOne thing October has going for him is that he is on both special teams, he returns and he covers. (I doubt if Landry will be on the kick coverage team.) October is still not doing the things I think a returner has to do."The longer that I'm married, the more I realize that the wife is right" - Angelus, July 24, 2010

Re: Receiving corps
That's true except that he is the 6th receiver this year rather than 5th like last year, also Landry can play receiver as well.Originally posted by Frito's FanDon't forget he's also a pretty decent receiver; if we happen to have any injury problems there this year, he could end up making a substantial contribution there as well.
To justify being a kick returner a guy has to accomplish the following things in my mind.
- Catch the ball on a consistent basis and not turn it over.
(October used to be good at this but is not at all releiable about catching the ball, he also coughed it up 3 times in a game last year.)
- Do not lose yards very often and try and get a consitent return.
(October is pretty good in this fashion, he does not lose yards often except when he lets the ball bounce past him.)
- Break at least one long return per game and take a couple all the way for td's in a year.
(October is non existent in this area, teams know he is no threat to go all the way. They don't have to game plan or kick out of bounds and we get no big reversals of field postion.)

Re: Receiving corps
I want to see Landy too, I think he would be an upgrade to Octobers returning but as some people have been saying October is just to versitile to take out of the lineup and theres no place for Landry on the roster besides taking out October. Remember Landrys still really young(22 or 23), let him improve his game on the PR.

Re: Receiving corps
Which also makes me think that October is still quite talented, but just tends to be lazy at times, especially if the blockers don't open an alley wide enough for a tornado to run through. It looked like he's finally realizing that sometimes he has to work hard in order to gain yards.Originally posted by Crimson KnightI thought October had a better game against BC too.. it just looked like he made the second effort to get extra yards.Last edited by MEEZY; 06-29-2004, 12:24 PM."The longer that I'm married, the more I realize that the wife is right" - Angelus, July 24, 2010

Re: Receiving corps
Personally, I didn't like the way he played. His bigger returns we because of good blocks but I did see him shed a few tackles, and he usually doesn't.Originally posted by Crimson KnightI thought October had a better game against BC too.. it just looked like he made the second effort to get extra yards.

Re: Receiving corps
Mookie looked fine last game IMO.........one problem I have is that it seems there are not nearly enough passes being thrown on routes where the receiver is to catch it in mid-flight.......too many times it seems that the receivers are running hooks and curls and their momentum is going away from the endzone or first down marker......Before you insult a man, walk a mile in his shoes. That way, when you insult him, you'll be a mile away, and have his shoes.
