Fred Davis (later known for hosting Front Page Challenge) hosts this 15 minute NFB production.

This short documentary from the On the Spot series - “National Film Board’s up-to-the-minute report of what’s happening somewhere in Canada” – invites us to visit the Edmonton Eskimos football team on their home ground. Host Fred Davis introduce us to some of the team’s key players and interviews its 28-year-old coach, Darrell Royal, a firm believer in the use of moving pictures in the coaching of modern football.

Includes footage of Billy Vessels, Rollie Miles, Normie Kwong, Jim Quondamatteo, Steve Mendryk & Claude Arnold.

What a fantastic find! Loved getting that glimpse back in time to those days when my father started working the Knothole Gang for Woodward's.

Almost got choked up watching it, Edmonton 1953.

Daryl Royal 28 years old, exuding strength and confidence.

Smiled when Royal omitted one player (circle) when illustrating on chalk board the split-t formation.

Really enjoyed watching, thank you.

This has been mentioned on here a few years back. Outstanding snapshot of a young Coach Royal and a young Eskimos team.

I sent a copy to Darrell Royal years ago and he watched it with 4 members of that team. They had never seen it because Edmonton didn't get television until 1954! Loved seeing Peggy Miller as the woman asking for the autograph at the end -- she is the woman who wrote the lyrics to the Eskimo fight song.

I was waiting for another circle also. Royal was sure ahead of his time and it's easy to see why he was so successful when he chose to go back to college ball.

Neat to see how much the game has evolved over time. Regina playing a 6-3 defensive formation... the whole offensive formation bunched up, no receivers wide... 3 RB set as standard...

the T is still run alot today especially at youth level

I saw this years ago when someone on this board also mentioned the clip. The city sure has changed a lot. It seems like ancient history to see things in black and white.
