Impressions of day one of camp...

Here are some random impressions from the 1st day of camp.

Overall, very impressive day and lots of good players

    Guys that stood out:

#4 Chris Kelley - Had very good moves and nice hands, seemed to know how to get open.
#3 Robert Leblanc - Looked alot more polished than I expected being just out of McGill seemed to know exactly what he was doing, not quite as good on long routes as short and medium
#14 Tony Tompkins - Quite small but caught the ball well and looked fast. The coaches did have to talk to him about routes and reading defenses a few times.
#93 Clinton Wayne - Worked very hard in drills, is more agile than I thought he was.

    Guys that perhaps struggled:

#56 Patrick Kabongo - A project, pulled a couple of illegal procedures and got beat real clean on at least on drill.
#84 Devin Lewis - Large receiver but didn't make some makeable catches and didn't get open often.

    Other random thoughts:

Kicker Chris Brewer has a real good leg, seemed to be hooking them at 1st but looked better after a bit.

The holders for field goals (Maas, Jones) had to do a bit of adjustment when Posteraro was kicking field goals being that he is a left footed kicker.

Both Garrett and Frank intercepted passes in receivers vs db drills.

Mookie Mitchell looked good, looked faster than last year for some reason.

Trevor Gaylor has the skinniest legs you ever did see.

Jason Lamar was barking out orders on defense, seemed to be in control and knew what he was doing.

Overall excellent 1st day, not alot of blatant screw ups a few techniques were corrected but the guys seemed to know their plays, all QB's threw the ball well. All tailbacks looked but no one stood out head and shoulders above the rest.

(The guys worked hard over the two practices can't imagine these teams in the states having camp in 30 plus degree weather.)

yup yup I thought he was strong, Nowacki looked abit unpolished to me but the guys I was most impressed with were:

Ed Hervey (you truly cant apreciate how good he is till you view him up close)
Gass and Lamar (they both look like they want the starters job bad)
Frank (was all over recievers in the mini scrimage)
McLendon (the guys speedbursts are amazing)

I'm glad to hear that Lamar looks like he wants to be an everydown player. Let's hope he keeps that up...

Yep, very nice to see him play with a lot of intensity. He could really improve this defence if his attitude has improved...

From what you saw of McLendon - and granted this is early on - how do you think he'd do in 3rd and a long 1yd against a tough D Line?

Well when it comes to a 3rd and long 1 teams with runningbacks of McLendons build(i.e Roberts, Keith) ussually have a Sczarka to take it. But in a long onw I know he could hit the line of scrimmage quick so i'm hoping he'll be good. Force = mass times acceleration and I know he has enough acceleration to compensate for the mass.

He he he guess thats what camp is all about. I thought he was the worst of the receivers out there of what I saw. He's big like Cloman and Gaylor but he didn't look as good as the others to me. I guess we'll see which of us was right when it comes to cut down day. One thing I'll say, we have more big receivers this year than any other year I can remember.

I think Elvis would get the ball in that situation.
I will not, for a moment longer, support an organization who chooses to cowardly kneel where they once fiercely & proudly stood

Agreed and I for one (depending on the situation) am big on the play action quick toss to someone like Dubuc who has played tight end and seen plenty of setes like that. I remember when we used to bring pless in for 3rd and ones and throw to him.

that's why I purposely asked the question that way... rather than asking about his speed & agility. I'm getting the idea that McLendon is more pure speed with a little power - as opposed to some guys that can combine both.

Guess we still have a way to go to see if he's the kind of guy that (with good blocking) can plow through the D and then take off.

hmmm... I never really thought about the potential difficulties of making this adjustment (to a Leftie that is). An added consideration.

Let's assume the Esks have Wad and keep GreenShoesDiaries around as well... how much more prep time and/or potential for mistakes is there having a leftie on board?
