    Revised Winter Thoughts

Thought that I was all done with Esk Football for several months, and that I could rest easy smiling inside during the winter, with a little flame of hope for a repeat Grey Cup/even dynasty burning quietly in my old cold gnarly heart.

Not anymore. Chris Jones leaving for Regina has me pretty concerned, peeved, and quashed my rare optimism.

Regina!!! Are you kidding us!!! Of all places. AND - ONE WEEK AFTER THE GREY CUP WIN!!!

It is very rare for a coach to leave their team after winning a Grey Cup. In fact, in 70 years only six others have done that:

    http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/cfl-55...QDBHNlYwNzYw--

AND - only one of those six has gone to another CFL team (Don Mathews after Baltimore folded, so not at all comparable). SO, what CJ has done is unprecedented in the CFL.

These years, I do appreciate it must be very difficult for any team to maintain top level consistency year after year. Free agency, the draw of the NFL, salary caps, self-interest, injury and other factors mesh to rapidly unravel any winning team; to say nothing of poaching staff who are under contract.

The Esks WERE on their way to becoming an even greater team than the 2015 version. But now, not so much. Not at all I feel. Everything with the EE totally “up in the air” for 2016.

Nearly impossible for a new EE coach to live up to the accomplishments of the old one. Anything less than Divisional first place and a Grey Cup win will be considered an underachievement. Also –I think the EE players are now, through victory in battle, solidly bonded with CJ whom they respected and probably (from what I saw how he chewed out players) feared. Considering that, it will be very difficult for any new coach to crack into that core group and get inside the players’ heads.

I have no good wishes for CJ’s future. I do understand the career move, because that is how our world works now. But … maybe he could have shown some class and waited another year or until his contract was up. Also can’t imagine coach and general manager in Regina is his dream job either (shudder).

Another reason to dislike Regina for their ongoing unethical choices (obviously if Jones left one week after Grey Cup, negotiations had been ongoing for some time) and overall poor form.
(Oh yes, btw - folks, next year a good chance Regina will have a far better insight into our team than they did this year).

Consider also that our defense was number one, and that in addition to head coach CJ was our defensive coordinator

So, now, instead of relief and looking forward to next year – there is discontent and uncertainty.
EE prognosis for next year? Not as great, regardless of who the next coach is.

The sky isn't falling. Hervey did it once, he can do it again. We still have our leader in Reilly. I am more concerned about losing free agents right now. We have great players and that won us the title. Jones made a lot of bonehead calls over his coaching time with us.

As long as we have Swerve looking for a new coach we will be fine in that department. Reilly is still locked own along with some other key pieces. We just need to keep the team intact and just about any coach worth his salt could have success with those guys. I do like the idea of a Reilly led Maas offense though.
I'm very responsible, when ever something goes wrong they always say I'm responsible.

Why do people point to their wrists when asking for the time, but don't point to their crotch when they ask where the bathroom is?

When the team actually folds...I'll start to get a little worried. After the sh!t show that was DM, p'tooey, Kavis, Hall, Goss, Lelacheur....I honestly can't believe we can be worse this upcoming season than we have been before. (knock on wood of course)

Free agency and re-signing our players is more so my concern than coaching. You could throw me in there as the head coach and I'm pretty sure I could guide us to 10 wins. Seriously.

My concern is more so re-signing guys like Grymes, Sewell, Bowman, Stafford, Sherritt, Hinds.

So if we get all those guys back and make a big addition or two in free agency, and get someone more experienced than me in there, we'll right around the 12-14 win mark again.

I, for one, have a lot of faith in Edward Hervey esq. and fully expect to see the Eskimos top of the West in 2016.

Time to get back to the mentality of us vs the world....no time to be upset over people trying to screw us over time to start grinding and show them why we're the envy of the league. 2016 is going to show this franchise's true charecter

Lots of great pieces still in place. Hervey will sign many of our FAs.

Don't forget that our opponents in the west have their own issues. BC doesn't scare me even with Wally. The don't have a QB. Calgary just lost Cornish. Saskatchewan may have CJ now, but they have much farther to go now than the Esks did when CJ took over. Winnipeg? Long way to go.

The good news is it FEELS like Ed Hervey will remain GM of the team for as long as he wants - I could never see him going to another team, ever.

IMO, the only way that would happen is if an NFL team came calling
I will not, for a moment longer, support an organization who chooses to cowardly kneel where they once fiercely & proudly stood

This is exactly my concern as well. I could care less about Jones at this point. The biggest task Hervey has is re-signing our important free agents. Hervey was the mastermind to our turnaround, he can keep this going. We are still the Eskimo Empire.

Jones has left, but the Grey Cup lives here now.

I am excited to think about the potential of a Maas led offense here with Reilly at the helm. I think Reilly will only continue to improve. A healthy RB in John White or perhaps a free agent splash there along with the big 3 receivers means a potent offense.

As long as the Riders don't rape and pillage all their competition in the West, it will be a competitive division next year. To prove to be the best, you have to beat the best. Right now, no matter how you slice it, we are the best.

                          Esks still team to beat

Esks took a blow, Regina will be improved, but Esks still team to beat.

If the Esks can hold on to their Free Agents with the whole league gunning for them (esp defence) they should be in better shape than any team in the west. And Hervey has build a good record. Calgary is in its own turmoil with grumpy John moving to be only GM and not totally happy. First time HC building his own staff. Loss of John Murphy is a bigger blow to Calgary IMO than loss of Jones will be to Edm.

Gain of Jones and Murphy (and retention of ODay) is a big step up for Regina, but we still have to integrate this two headed GM and deal with a roster composed of aging overpaid for their current production vets and a total lack of NI depth and way to many mediocre imports. Big job, 2017 will be better than 2016 if it all works.

Winnipeg is still Winnipeg and Head Coach Mike O'Shea looking over his shoulder at OC/HC in waiting Paul Lapolice. What is the over/under on HC Lapo taking over - 5 games?

In BC, Wally will be trying to recreate his past in a new world with the constraint of the team being up for sale.
