    Hervey limps into rehab
Eskimos receiver likely out six to eight weeks

    Vicki Hall
    The Edmonton Journal

EDMONTON - Clad in blue and white Bermuda shorts and a gigantic knee brace, Eskimos receiver Ed Hervey hobbled to his locker stall on Monday and popped some Sugar Babies into his mouth before facing the media horde.

"There's no pain, but I don't know if that's a positive or a negative at this point," he said, leaning on his crutches. "You know, these things happen. They happen to everyone, unfortunately. I have to deal with it.

"I feel good about it. I'm going to do the best I can to rehab and get back."

Initial tests indicate Hervey tore the medial collateral ligament in his right knee during Saturday's 36-30 victory over Hamilton. Should an MRI scheduled for this morning confirm the diagnosis, the 32-year-old expects to be sidelined for six to eight weeks.

Hervey's anterior cruciate ligament appears to be in tact, but that too must be confirmed by the MRI.

"If you have to tear a ligament, the one you want to tear is the MCL," Hervey said. "Hopefully, I'll be back in time for the last part of the season and, hopefully, the playoffs. But that's looking far down the line. I don't know anything official at this point. It's just a nasty injury."

So nasty that, as of Monday afternoon, Hervey hadn't watched the game tape. His teammates warned him not to watch the gruesome incident that caused the Commonwealth Stadium crowd to gasp in horror.

When he eventually gets up the nerve to watch it, Hervey will see his legs give like a wishbone just before a pile of players lands on his right knee.

"I was able to watch Joe Theisman's injury, so I know I can stomach this," he said. "I didn't really feel anything. I just looked to the side and saw that my leg wasn't where it's supposed to be. I must have been in shock more than anything. But the guys got off me and I tried to roll over to get as comfortable as I could. I closed my eyes for a second and tried to think about everything that was going on.

"Before I knew it, all my buddies were out there."

Hervey threw one arm around A.J. Gass and another around Singor Mobley as he limped off the field.

In spite of the pain and fear that his season might be over, Hervey waved to the fans as he rode to the dressing room on the back of a golf cart.

"I just want to thank everyone who was so supportive that evening," Hervey said. "I'll be fine. I'm a true trooper, and I'll get better.

"I've had people come up to me and say how sorry they are. They were in tears. That's why I love it here. Edmonton has always been good to me, even in tough times like this."

In the meantime, Hervey's temporary replacement practised Monday with the first-string offence. The Eskimos acquired Kwame Cavil from Montreal on Sunday in a trade for defensive tackle Clinton Wayne.

Cavil plans to study the Eskimos playbook late into the night so he can be ready for Friday's road game against the B.C. Lions.

"I consider myself pretty smart," said Cavil, who will wear No. 82. "I ain't behind the curve or anything.

"I'm going to try and learn as much as I can as quickly as possible. I know that's a challenge, but I'm ready for it."

Hervey is one of the most popular players in the dressing room, so his teammates are trying to come to grips with the fact he likely won't be in the lineup for months.

"That's a big loss," said defensive back Donny Brady. "But his heart is with the team and we're with him. We're really not losing him in spirit. He's still here in soul, mind, body -- everything. He's just not going to be on the field.

"You know, I'm a spiritual man so it ain't nothing."

Bradley pleads for return of lucky coin

    Vicki Hall
    The Edmonton Journal

EDMONTON - Mike Bradley has a special request for the fan who purchased his old helmet last December at the annual Edmonton Eskimos locker-room sale.

There's a special coin tucked underneath the Riddell logo on the front of the helmet that Bradley would dearly love to get back.

"It's a good-luck charm that I've had for, like, 10 years, since university," said Bradley, a fan favourite for his hard work on special teams. "I left it here over the winter, not thinking about the locker-room sale. And somebody bought my helmet, so my good-luck charm is gone with it.

"I wouldn't mind having it back. If the person who bought my helmet could dig the coin out and return it, I'd really appreciate it.

"The message on the coin reads, 'I will watch over you.' A Mennonite woman gave coins to every member of the Waterloo football team prior to the Atlantic Bowl."

If the person with the helmet contacts the Eskimos office, Bradley pledges to show his appreciation with a signed team jersey.

    TOO MANY FLAGS

The Eskimos lead the CFL with 66 penalties for 639 yards, and head coach Danny Maciocia is fed up with the ridiculous number of flags for offsides and procedure.

"There are good penalties and dumb penalties," he said. "When you play with an attitude, you're going to be exposed to penalties. I have no problems with that. I don't care if we lead the league in penalties. I don't want to lead the league in stupid penalties, and we had our share the other night.

"Those are stupid penalties, and we're not going to put up with it here."

    LORD OF THE DANCE

The Eskimos receiving corps is known for casually tossing the football aside after scoring touchdowns. Former head coach Tom Higgins espoused the theory that his players should "act like they've been there before."

So how will Kwame Cavil fit into the mix? This is a guy who dances after every first down, never mind a touchdown.

"I don't care how they do it," Maciocia said. "Just get in the end zone. If they want to celebrate, they can celebrate. If the receiving coach wants to go out there and celebrate with them, he can do that as long as he puts on a helmet and doesn't take it off."

Cavil loves to shake his bootie, but he also wants to fit in with new teammates like Jason Tucker, Derrell (Mookie) Mitchell and the injured Ed Hervey.

"I'm excited to come in here and add my little flavour," he said. "We'll see what's up. We have a different kind of receiving corps here. Mookie, Hervey and Tuck -- they're low-key type of guys. I'm a little flamboyant, so I'll see how they react. They're the vets, so I'll see if they allow it."

    WALKING WOUNDED

The Eskimos are a wounded crew heading into Friday's battle for first place in the CFL West against the B.C. Lions in Vancouver.

Wide receiver Ed Hervey is out indefinitely with a knee injury. Canadian receiver Andrew Nowacki is expected to miss several weeks with a broken index finger. Cornerback Malcolm Frank saved a touchdown last week against Hamilton with a shoestring tackle on D.J. Flick. The Edmonton cover man injured his shoulder on the play, but he plans to be in the lineup Friday to help defend the potent aerial attack led by Lions quarterback Dave Dickenson.

"These are the games you absolutely want to play in," Frank said. "This is for first place. I want to be out there. I will be out there. I intend to play."

Cornerback Davis Sanchez (hamstring) did not practise on Monday. Neither did defensive back Shannon Garrett (leg) or defensive lineman Antico Dalton (undetermined.)

Promising rookie receiver Chris Kelley is questionable with a twisted knee and ankle.

"We're a little thin," Kelley said. "Even if there's a little bit of pain, I'm going to have to play through it no matter what."

Due to all the injuries, the Eskimos signed receiver Devin Lewis to the practice roster. He was a late cut in training camp.

I like this line, at least the guy is aware that the vets set the standard.

Yeah, that's nice to see he's willing to adjust.

          Ironic quote of the day.
"I consider myself pretty smart," said Cavil, who will wear No. 82. "I ain't behind the curve or anything."
I officially retract my vote for DDS as Prime Minister. He's clearly incompetent.

As long as he can catch the ball...

We need Shannon, Davis, and Malcom in the lineup.

Yeah, I noticed that too. Retard boy just better lose any bad attitude he has and come to Edmonton to play. I don't mind a cocky player who's confident in his abilities, as long as his attitude doesn't translate into friction in the dressing room (just to save you the trouble E4E; friction in the dressing room! haha get it guys, do you get it).
                Go Eskies!

I suspect that his team mates will make it very clear as to what kind of attitude he should have! If he thinks that he is going to come here and behave like Copeland does in Montreal...he may not last very long.

To me it was never about what I accomplished on the football field, it was about the way I played the game.

There will be no problem. He's bright enough to "get the EE message". Although I can't gaurantee he won't forget himself in the end zone ....When he looks around and finds himself all alone acting foolish, it will be the last time. The crowd will have a good laugh! end of chapter.
