    Grey Cup Ratings

TORONTO - Despite a wild finish, the 93rd Grey Cup drew a smaller audience than last year.

An average of 3.168 million viewers tuned in to CBC Sunday to watch the Edmonton Eskimos beat the Montreal Alouettes 38-35 in overtime at B.C. Place.

This Grey Cup had a hard act to follow. Last year, an average of 4.012 million viewers tuned in to see the Toronto Argonauts defeat the B.C. Lions 27-19 at Ottawa's Frank Clair Stadium, the third-highest rated game ever.

The most watched Grey Cup was the 2002 contest between Montreal and Edmonton, which drew 4.4 million viewers.

Audiences for Sunday's game peaked at 3.765 million viewers between 9 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. ET. An average of 2.764 million watched the entire broadcast (pre-game, player introductions and post-game interviews).

The record audience for a sporting event in Canada, with more than 10-million English and French-language viewers on CBC, was the Canadian men's gold medal hockey win over the U.S. at the 2002 Salt Lake Olympics.

Everybody that did not watch missed a legendary game.

And shame on those that did miss it - it'll be a long time before there's a grey cup this wild again. Another 44 years for another overtime is quite a while. The esks will be going for cup number 57 in that contest.

Not a surprise that its down... last years had the two biggest (english) tv markets in the country going at it.

A little troubling that the number is below the '03 game though IIRC.
Look. We can go round and round about this all the live long day. Let's keep it simple. I embody amazement. Can you dig on that? Good. Then meet me on the corner of rock and roll, and bring a flask of something that burns.

Somehow, I think the only Grey Cup match that would beat last year's numbers would be the Toronto Argonauts vs. the Toronto Argonauts.

I think some fairweather fans were tired of seeing Edmonton and Montreal... 3 out of the last 4 years. Also, the game started late in the East.

Late is better. That's prime time. That's why it started late....

Late also leaves it competing with one NFL game as opposed to several, which can be a difference maker, espeacilly in Ontario.

I agree, it was their loss... That was one heck of a game.

In all honesty, I was completely disappointed with the prospect of another Montreal/Edmonton Grey Cup.

I still watched it, and was entertained as always, but I can imagine that many middle-of-the-road fans didn't bother.

I would argue that the reason 2003's ratings were so high was because the game was in Regina, so the 950,000 Saskatchewanians who weren't at the game (even the ones who rarely watch CFL) tuned in just to support the whole thing. Also, that game was an exciting rematch; this year's seemed like a boring rehash (on paper, that is).

What was the consensus that this wasn't a "sexy" match-up because you didn't have the hometown lions vs the defending champions, if it would've been Edmonton adn Toronto, that would've been a defensive struggle which is fine 'cause we'd win but watching 2 offenses fire on all cylinders is more exciting. And even if it was BC and T.O still that would've been a defensive struggle or a rout by T.O. Either way, even if the numbers weren't there, this Grey Cup match up would prove to be the most exciting and it was. Just look at all the storylines with Matthews and his history with us, plus all the changes of players between the two teams, adn CC going against montreal and the Don after being in the same stadium in 78 cheering for his beloved Alouettes while the Don was still a member of the Empire, a sith Apprentice- its priceless
