TORONTO - Despite a wild finish, the 93rd Grey Cup drew a smaller audience than last year.
An average of 3.168 million viewers tuned in to CBC Sunday to watch the Edmonton Eskimos beat the Montreal Alouettes 38-35 in overtime at B.C. Place.
This Grey Cup had a hard act to follow. Last year, an average of 4.012 million viewers tuned in to see the Toronto Argonauts defeat the B.C. Lions 27-19 at Ottawa's Frank Clair Stadium, the third-highest rated game ever.
The most watched Grey Cup was the 2002 contest between Montreal and Edmonton, which drew 4.4 million viewers.
Audiences for Sunday's game peaked at 3.765 million viewers between 9 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. ET. An average of 2.764 million watched the entire broadcast (pre-game, player introductions and post-game interviews).
The record audience for a sporting event in Canada, with more than 10-million English and French-language viewers on CBC, was the Canadian men's gold medal hockey win over the U.S. at the 2002 Salt Lake Olympics.
