curious thing is that this kind of writing consistently finds a place in the sports sections. Pretty much every paper has it's version of Dowboy. It's not journalism, rather it is emotive writing based on knee-jerk reactionism with the intent of gaining acceptance of the lowest common denominator within the readership. And sadly, it works.

edit... but that said, I agree that when these writers go too far the editors are quick to clamp down... then it can turn to a battle of ego vs paycheque!

I believe the answer is D - all of the above, since he'll lose his train of thought in the article and end up sounding like he just finished smoking a bowl (wait he sounds that way normally)

do you think the editors should take some flack for allowing this piece (of you know what) into the Herald?

People in Calgary will love this stuff, why would the editors be worried about what Edmonton thinks. This is just like the 'unbiased' political views our media has these days. The more people that like dowbiggin in Calgary the more papers that will be sold. No one cares down there if he slams the Eskimos and their fans. Much like the fact that we wouldn't be all up in arms of a columnist that slams Calgary and their fans. Tripe is tripe no matter what city or what media outlet.

The editors certainly do have to be held accountable. It's not like Dowboy's piece ran without any approvals! I think what's sad is that the Editors missed the 'self-inflicted' mockery of Calgarians raised by this piece.

If you follow the logic... because he hangs his comments on the unsupportable claim that Edmonton doesn't win, then he is in fact taking a shot at Calgary.

This in itself would be ok - from the standpoint of 'we've got to do better than our Northern rivals' except for the fact that Dowboy isn't saying that.

And for the Editors not to see this, or at least to temper it, means that they either agree with the logic or they agree with Dowboy. Either way, they look foolish.

you are absolutely correct... except when you unravel what he wrote in a logical way, then what he's really doing is taking a shot at Calgary! He's making them all look bad, not Edmonton! Though few will see that.

Maybe we should invite Bruce up to Commonwealth next year for lets say a Friday night game. Can get him setup with a nice College Corner ticket and he can further elaborate more on what he thinks about Edmonton and the Edmonton Eskimos Football Club. I'm sure he would have a great time.

i liked his retort! i love the fact that there is so much hatird between calgary and edmonton. there honestly isn't a better rivalry around. the stamps hate the esks, the flames hate the oilers and all the players and media buy in. it makes things exciting. so for continuing that rivalry and making all of you so mad, i applaud bruce. it's rivalries like this that make it nesescary for us to have so many mods on GSG.com.

I certainly didn't give him permission to use my name.

I'll be talking to the editor.

easy wheezy...they is such a strong word. i'm only one man, i don't speak for the entire city or team. much like not every edmonton fan believes the mass trade was clean. don't worry, i live in northern alberta, i know for a fact. but that doesn't mean i think all eskimo fans thought it wasn't fair.

it's pretty lame bruce wasn't confident enough in his opinion he had to write another article to prove his point. he didn't really prove anything except the fact that edmonton fans hate his point of view. that article was like a thread on any forum. he said something and people argued it. but there are often posters who need to say 'the highway to calgary' is the best part of your city. he's one of them.

good on you guys for making him write that. you can tell you got under a writer's skin when he puts your name and comments in the paper. i'd be proud, not mad. mission accomplished, you guys made him look like a tool.

I think he did a good enough job of that all by himself.. He didn't need much prodding..

Dowbiggen is a complete doofus. He used to post over on the hockey messageboard I frequent and he's simply clueless.

How smart can a person be that spends all his time on a messageboard?
