    Hindsight is 94/94

When you see the Flames looking up their stars why could the Oil not have done that in the spring with Smyth? Or did Lowe do the right thing by getting something for him and not over paying him?

No, I would think that it has become painfully obvious (if the last 2 months of the season were not obvious enough) that Lowe screwed the pooch royally. His usuall defenders will come on here, and list the numerous reasons why this is not his fault, you can believe them if you want to.

Well it all comes down to recognizing whether it was an overpayment or not. It certainly wasn't as it turns out. Despite Lowe chiding Buffalo for not taking it personally and it is all about business I get the frim impression that he does take things personally and lets that effect his judgement on certian moves. I don't hold Lowe or the organization at fault for not being able to deliver in the last short while. I do do hold them at fault for creating a non player friendly atmosphere with the organization over the last 5 years or so.

The mistakes made over these years are coming home to roost.

Well yes it does matter who was 'at fault'. Two things, accountability for ones decisions and recognizing bad decsions so you won't repeat them.

            Hindsight?

            What's that?

            He's 100% correct IMO.

I've supported Lowe to this point, but it sounds like this deal was made in 20mins prior to the deadline when it should have been resolved well in advance of that. Lowe should have been on the phones all morning to teams seeing what they woudl give us for Smyth.

            We got hosed.

            Again.

The UFA list this year sucks as well. Great.

Drury, Briere, Gomez, Timmonem, Hannan, Rafalski, Kariya, Markov

            That's about it. Joy.

Lots of people here didn't even need it, and I've barely even skimmed for some of the stuff I had a few days later when I started to break down the comparables for the deal.

It was bad then, it's terrible now. Kevin Lowe absolutely dropped the ball with an elite player, for the second consecutive time, and he's yet to make up for it. Trading Ryan Smyth has managed to partially cost this team the playoffs one year, and will likely cost them two more playoff appearances before all is said and done...

Notice how there are two nets?

The goal isn't to score goals, it's to score more goals than the other team .

Ryan Smyth is elite at doing that. Shawn Horcoff as well. Ales Hemsky is well on his way. Raffi Torres and Fernando Pisani are very effective at this. As was Jason Smith, and Steve Staios. Hopefully we can soon add guys like Smid, Pouliot, Pitkanen and Greene to that list.

Ryan Smyth is an elite player for the same reasons that Chris Druy is.

And for the same reasons that Daniel Briere and Scott Gomez are not.

I just don't think Smyth and the word 'elite' should be anywhere near eachother. That's all.

                    edit.

None of those guys are as cool as Maurice Richard was. That guy would score 30-50 goals in a season when the season was 50 games long. He broke his ankle and his wrist and still made it back in an era when those kinds of injuries could mean your career. He came back to finish a game after dislocating his shoulder...and scored 2 goals. I admire this. I ripped out my shoulder this year. I cried like a 5 year old. He had his put back in and went out and scored 2 goals. Today's hockey players act tough, but compared to Rocket Richard they're pussies! He even punched out a ref!

Smyth is an upper echelon player IMO, as well. 36 goals in his last 2 seasons. Plus all the intangibles he brings.

We'd be happy to pay him $6M a year for 5 years right now, yet $5.5M was out of the question 3 months ago?

I really believe Smyth had his mind made up to test the free agent waters no matter what the Oilers (or Islanders) did. Would I rather have the O'Marra, Nielson, and Plante over 18 extra games with Smyth? Yes I would.

Just one man's opinion, mind you.

An Elite player can carry an entire team on his back and deliver a win when otherwise they wouldn't or couldn't........Smyth has never nor will ever be that guy.

He is perhaps one of the best "complimentary" players in the game today, but that is about it. He will never be "the guy". He was looking to be paid as such......the Oilers are better off without him....and this is from a non-Oilers fans perspective.
