Phaneuf turns down 6 million a year?

The story in today's Herald is that Phaneuf has turned down 30 million for 5 years? Wow, greedy or what? Making 6 million a year in your home province in a town where you are a hero? It's just not enough?

I am just speculating here but I think that Cal Nichols might have been tipped off about the Phaneuf negotiations (if Dowbiggin knows then why not Nichols) and wisely said "enough is enough, too rich for me." His common sense told him that the salary situation is again spiralling out of all control. Sure, the Canadian dollar has had a remarkable resurgence but it doesn't fix all of the salary problems.

When the strike was over, the top salary was supposed to be $6 million U.S. a year and now a very young and very talented D-man (albeit a rather inconsistent one) is turning that money down. I assume that this means Ovechkin will be up in the 10 million U.S. a year bracket, almost idential to where we were before the strike.

I hope Bill Butler is taking note. Once again, its a billionaire's game and there's no end in sight to the inflationary game Get real Bill, your original 750,000 investment won't buy you anything in today's game.

It's just a readjustment, that was started by Kevin Lowe when he sent out his offers to Vanek and Penner. Players are going to be paid for what they will (should) do instead of what they have done... there's nothing wrong with that, at all.

Escalation here is impossible, revenues are tied directly to the cap. The cap number, and really, salary numbers, are imaginary for all intents and purposes. You could pay every player $10,000,000 a season, but after escrow that number would be significantly lower. The cap only matters in a sense of team building, and in itself, is inflationary, as there is a clause in the CBA that it will automatically increase by 5% every year.

As for Celine... well, he's never been that bright . It'd be pretty damn funny if/when he's taken to arbitration and ends up with a 2 year deal worth much less than than that while he's anticipating a big RFA offer sheet...

The cap is what it is.

GM's have to be smart in a few ways:

1. Lock up assets with long-term contracts.

2. Protect their RFA's

3. Be DAMN sure that you sign key cogs in your wheel. The days of expensive rent-a-players are over, to some extent, because they are just going to be TOO expensive for most teams to sign without cap reprisals / no wriggle room to sign RFA's / UFA's.


Is Dion worth the money? Hard to say...but obviously Calgary thought so. Is Dion an idiot to turn down that kind of money for 5 years...? Again, time will tell.

This is exactly why Goodenow's proposal for that huge rollback was genius. He knew that within a few years the salaries would once again escalate.

If Sheldon Souray is worth 5.5, and Timmonen is worth north of 6, Phaneuf is definitely worth 6. The kid may look greedy, but maybe he doesn't want to take the hometown discount that Iggy, Regehr and Kipper took. Maybe he has no loyalty to the Flames? Maybe he hates the coach

Frankly, I think he is a little over-rated and is starting to get a target on his back for being a punk. Yet, the Calgary media are pumping him up which in turn inflates his asking price.

The Flames had better win the prize this year as next summer will be expensive if they want to keep the likes of Phaneuf, Huselius and Tanguay.

Tanguay is signed for one more year... but Langkow is a UFA, so close enough .

Being those 3 combined (Phaneuf, Langkow and Huselius) are making 4.627... well, there will be some casualities in Calgary next Summer, as that number will likely triple, and Calgary will have to cut about $8,000,000 in salary, after the added cap space...

Frankly I don't see how the Flmaes will be able to keep Phaneuf. Inginla is getting around 6-7mill a year correct. I don't see how a team can pay 2 guys that kind of oney becuase it would be one large cap hit and would more or less mess up a team since they would have to pretty much junk a lrge amount of the team in oder to stay in the cap.

Not to mention how much everyone rubbed their hands together when New Jersey was NEVER gonna get under the cap a few years ago, and magically they made it happen.

If the Flames organization has ANY brains, they've already got a plan in motion and will get it done.
