The thing I don't like about motivating players by benching them is that it is a very short lived resurgence. Benching him and ripping him in the media isn't going to make Penner a good player for 5+ years....it just causes him to be motivated for a few games.
If you want a player to reach their potential on the nightly basis...coach them, place them correctly within the scheme, and allow those players to play to strengths while minimizing their weaknesses. Penner will have a couple good games then start playing like he has for the last year and a bit.
