    Oil Play Near Perfect Game

    Literally.

    Only complaint I have is not scoring on the 5v3.

    Hemsky is at the point where he can play poorly and still make a positive difference.

    #10 had all kinds of problems with the puck, but still created much, much, more than he gave up.

    #46 looked like he wanted to stay here for a while.

    Roli was excellent.

    One of the best games the Oilers have played all year.

    I'm scared to say it... but Smid may have figured it out. I will be beyond happy if he did, but I'm baiting my breath for the time being.

    -Oilers played very well in their own end. A few mis-cues but Roli bailed them out, and they got a few lucky bounces
    -PP looked terrible. Nobody was moving, and they just looked lackadaisacal. It's not often a team blows two 5 on 3 PP's and doesn't have it bite them in the ass
    -Hemsky is good. Damn.
    -Gagner looked better in the first 5 minutes tonight than he has all year. And then he looked pretty lost for the rest of the game (although he had one really good shift in the third). Maybe he's starting to turn it around?
    -Smid, Staois, Souray, Vish, Gilbert and Grebashkov all played an "A" game tonight. When you have all your defencemen playing well, you'll always have a chance
    -Speaking of Vishnovsky, I never knew what a great skater he was. He has played great the past few weeks.
    -Roloson played well, but didn't always look comfortable. But you can't criticize a shutout. I'm starting to think that he'll be here for the duration of the season, and maybe even next year...

    And lastly, the Oilers better be damn ready for a 'Nucks team that is going to be grumpy, fast and physical on Wednesday. Should be a fun one to watch...

      We blew TWO 5-on-3's? Aw, geez ...were they at least productive? (good shots not going in......rather than no shots or bad shots?)

      And I wonder what the Linden ceremony will do to the Canucks...will it fire them up or lull them to sleep (like ours so often do to us) ?

        The PP sucked.

        And quite simply...

        It was all Hemsky. IMO it was one of the worst game he's played this season. Easily.

        The fact he still makes his way onto the scoresheet in a game like this is a huge step forward in his development imo.

        Hemsky is a top 5 RW in this league.

        There are 11 RW's paid more than him.

        In my mind, he is at the very least a top 5 contract in the league. In my mind he is the 4th best RW in the league... Hossa, Iginla and Alfie are the only guys up on him.

          Agreed about the near perfect game though they did get a big break when Roli tried to give one away and we end up getting a breakaway goal by Nilsson. The Oilers after the early goal basically trapped for the rest of the game. It's too bad we have to resort to that but it worked effectively and gave some of thse teams that kill us with it some of their own medicine. The early soft goal and the fact that we had two fights early set the tone.

          Nice to see that rat Burrows be -3 on the night.

          Souray takes out two Canucks with one slapshot, good thing neither was seriously hurt but it was an impressive feat.

            Hemsky seems to have taken the last step towards becoming an elite player in the league which makes sense because he is now 25 years of age and there was once upon a time when that was the age that you came into your own.

            Hemsky isn't like Lafleur but the Flower was a right wing who was drafted at age 20, as was the case in those days. For the next 3 years he had flashes of greatness but many said that he was a disappointment and would never be an elite player in the NHL.

            His break out season came at age 24 (when he shed his helmet) and for the next 6 years he had 100 points or more and he was one of the most exciting wingers the league has ever seen.

            The point is that many players are rushed into the league today and if there isn't production in the first few years they are shown the door. That's why I think the Oilers gave up on Rucinsky, Satan, Whitney, Lupul and a host of others. They, like many teams in the NHL, wanted too much too soon.

            Most people on this thread won't remember this but Sather said he came very close to trading Paul Coffey, in his 2nd season, to Buffalo for Richard Martin. I remember how John Short insisted in 1982 that the Oilers trade Glenn Anderson. On and on the list went but good franchises tend to wait on guys.

            Well, after all that I hope I haven't jinxed Hemsky. We need to scoop up virtually all of the points on this home stand if there will be any Oiler hockey in May.

              Souray's slapper taking out two Canucks and Nilsson's goal were the two highlights of the game for me.
              I officially retract my vote for DDS as Prime Minister. He's clearly incompetent.

                There came a point yesterday when it was clear as day that the Canucks were sitting their guys at their blue line with no respect towards a dump in whatsoever. And still we continued to try and carry the puck across the line. Also, not to beat a dead horse but Horc needs to be moved to the second PP unit.

                Gilbert has really brought his game around from where it was early in the season. Vish is great but still worries me with some of his decisions in his own end. Finally, Mr. Souray was a beast. He was a mean SOB out there last night. Made some great hash-mark to far blue line passes and took out two Nucks with one puck but my favourite moment was at the end of the game when Hordichuk came and hit him after the final buzzer sounded. He turned around and one-punched Hordichuk's ass to the ice. THAT...was the highlight of last night!

                      You have to have a lead first, early in the game. That hasn't happened nearly enough.

                        There's not a team in the league that doesn't play some version of the trap when they're up 2-0.

                        Detroit probably plays the best trap in the league. It's why they score so many goals on the counter-punch.
