Well, once again, the Oil piss away a pretty good effort overall due to a lack of quality depth.
The Oilers, and Horcoffs line in general, got absolutely owned in the 3rd and OT by Arnott-Sullivan-Dumont (they combined for 9 points on the night) and the game could've easily been lost in regulation if not for a couple huge saves by Rolie (we're saying that a lot more lately aren't we
). IIRC Horcs and Arnott faced off in our zone 5-6 times in the 3rd and OT and Arnie won all but 1 (he finished an incredible 14-3 in the faceoff circle or 82%, while Horcs still finished a respectable 10-9 or 53%).
But this made it PAINFULLY obvious that we desperately need someone, anyone, to add depth at C! MacT had played Gagners line against Arnotts earlier in the game, didn't go so well, so he puts out Brodziak in the 3rd against their top line to give Horcs a breather. Well, what do you know, two seconds later it's in our net.
If we're getting dominated by a line centred by Jason Arnott of all people, how would we stack up against Zetterbergs line, Thorntons line, etc? (Assuming we make the POs at all). Actually scratch that, I think we all know how we stack up. Hopefully Lowebellini has something in the works for us.
Some other notes:
- Hemsky had the worst game I've seen him play in a long while. Fumbling the puck, making poor reads on the PP, bad passes...just bad. But he's allowed to lay an egg once in awhile
- I'm liking Smid more and more all the time and he seems to pick up his game with increased responsibility. I think in the very near future we can look back at the CFP trade and say it turned out a lot more even than the highway robbery it looks like now.
- Kudos to JFJ for netting his 1st NHL goal after playing 55 games over the course of a few years with the big club. Played a very effective game tonight and if he can do that consistently he deserves to keep his spot.
