    University Cup Game 3 Recap

    #2 Moncton 8
    #3 Western 3

    Shots:
    Moncton: 10-14-16 = 40
    Western: 4-7-12 = 23

Both teams had some chances in the early going. Moncton's Gilbert LeFrancois drew first blood for the Aigles Bleus as he scored on Moncton's first shot, from the slot at 3:01 of the 1st. LeFrancois later walked out from behind the net and fired one over Mike D'Alessandro's shoulder at 12:31. Western struck back when Sal Peralta poked in a rebound on the power play at 14:49, but Moncton quickly replied as Pierre-Luc Laprise deflected a point shot into the bottom corner at 15:16 to make it 3-1 Aigles Bleus after 1.

Western took a penalty at 0:40 of the 2nd, and Moncton struck again only 9 seconds after that, as LeFrancois completed his hat trick off a goalmouth scramble. Moncton later had a 50-second 2-man advantage, but failed to beat the Western penalty kill. Moncton hung around the Western zone for the rest of the period, holding a 22-5 lead in shots at one point, but the 2nd period ended at 4-1 Moncton.

In the 3rd, Western narrowed the deficit to 2 early as Ryan Hare squeezed one through Jonathan Pelletier's pads for his first of two on the game to make it 4-2. Moncton didn't waste time getting it back as Sebastien Savage went inside-outside around a Western defenceman and pushed it through D'Alessandro's five-hole to restore Moncton's 3-goal advantage at 5:35. The Aigles Bleus kept the pressure on and scored again at 9:52, when Daniel Hudgin put a rebound into a yawning cage for a 6-2 lead. Western didn't give up, and Hare put a slapshot through Pelletier's glove on a 3-on-2 rush at 14:19 to make it 6-3. Moncton's Laprise scored his 2nd of the game on a top-corner laser at 16:07, and Karl Fournier put Moncton up 5 with a backhand deke at 17:30.

Besides LeFrancois' 3 goals, Laprise had 2 goals and an assist to lead Moncton in scoring. Hare had 2 goals for the Mustangs.

Players of the game were LeFrancois for Moncton and Hare for Western.

Moncton played a lot better than yesterday against Saskatchewan.

The bounces off the end boards on dump-ins were really getting to the goalies, particularly D'Alessandro - there were a few moments where the net was left empty with the puck right in front of it, but it was cleared before any opposing player could put it in.

If Western beats Saskatchewan by 2-7 goals, Moncton will advance to the gold-medal game...if Western beats Saskatchewan by 8 goals, Western will advance...if Saskatchewan wins or loses by 1, they will advance.

The Alberta/UQTR game at Clare Drake tonight is completely sold out ...they are selling seats in the gym for $2 to watch it on the big screen.
We're cheering Fight Fight Fight On Eskimos...
