    Schremp sent back to London

The Edmonton Oilers have reduced their roster to 26 players with two player assignments.

Centre Rob Schremp was returned to the London Knights of the Ontario Hockey League and defenceman Dan Syvret was assigned to the Hamilton Bulldogs of the American Hockey League.

Schremp and Syvret were teammates with London last season, helping the Knights to a record setting OHL campaign that culminated in a Memorial Cup championship. Syvret was the Knights’ captain.

With the assignments, the Oilers now have 26 players remaining in camp; three goaltenders, eight defencemen and 15 forwards.

The Oilers open their 26th NHL regular season on Wednesday, October 5th when they host the Colorado Avalanche. The opening face-off for the season opener is 8:00 p.m. at Rexall Place.

So we still have 1 extra forward, d-man and goalie..

Morrison will be sent down to the A once Jussi's cleared to play.. who's gonna go for the other two positions?

Conklin should be traded... I like what I've seen from Morrison.

Not really surprised with Schremp being sent back down to the minors.. next year he'll be a force.

Shremp impressed but it came down to a choice between him and Rita and Rita was impressive. I was cheering for Shremp but I can understand the logic here. Cut Rita and I believe you lose him while Shremp would be unrestricted in five yrs I believe if he plays 10 games. I was half expecting this. Problem is Robbie won't develop as much in London. Should rack up a ton of points though. I'm glad I don't have to make these decisions. Tough decision.

I agree.. it was pretty much destined that he'd go back to the "O".. he would have to have cleared waivers to go to the AHL, I believe, so it was NHL or OHL. Not much choice after he kinda faded the past few games.

Well from what I watched of him I thought he deserved a spot on this team more so then Rita. The verdict is still out on Rita, who knows what to expect from him but I highly doubt he will be playing much with the Oilers. It sucks to see Schremp go but its better to have him playing lots at the OHL level then playing on a 3rd or 4th line in the NHL.

I'm not surprised at any of this ...good move, IMO.

Schremp gets another year of junior to get stronger and gain experience (leadership value as well)...Syvret has used up his jr, so he goes to Hamilton for experience.

I kinda hope it's Morrison that sticks around with Jussi...he's shown better than Conklin so far IMO. But then, I wouldn't be surprised to see him sent down either.

Re: Schremp sent back to London

I think Schremp's defensive give-aways cost him and that he needs to develop more in that area but I also have the feeling that we will be crying for some sort of play maker on the PP within a month. There are few people with his offensive talent on the Oiler squad.

Now that some of the smoke is clearing it looks like the Oilers have solved their problem for a dominant defenceman but are still needy in terms of that front line center and a number one goalie. I agree that Mike Morrison could be the sleeper and could end up as a tandem with Jussi Markkanen. Hopefully, with the Oilers salary cap room, they can still make a deal for a center sometime in the next 3 months.

I am not sure what to think about what has happened so far, those exhibition games sure haven't given me any warm and fuzzy feelings but then again they are just exhibiton matches. We know that Pronger and Peca are both proven performers but I think that Ryan Smyth, Shawn Horcoff and Alex Hemsky will be the keys. We need 35 goals from Smyth and at least 25 goals from both Hemsky and Horcoff or it could be a long Winter.

This really isn't a surprise....Schremp just isn't ready for the NHL yet. He was strong playing against other rookies but disappeared when other teams started playing their veterans. He'll be fine in London. He will be the 'go to' guy and Hunter can help him fine tune his defensive game.
I also think that this move is an indication of what Lowes future plans are. It wouldn't surprise me to see him acquire a player in the mold of a Sykora. A decent offensive player who isn't afraid to take a pass inside his own teams blueline. I also wouldn't mind a little more defensive depth.....I am not completely sold on our 4-6 defensmen.

Can't Schremp still be called up to the bigs during the season and then be dropped back to the OHL as long as he doesn't play more than 10 games?

I am not sure but I believe that if (as a junior) you have been sent down before the season starts then you can only be recalled in emergency conditions when the parent club's injury situation is desperate. I can't ever recall when this happened with the Oilers. I am pretty sure that you won't see him back here this year. Time to start relying on all these expensive veterans to carry the load.

Cool thanks.. I wasn't sure how it worked with Jr. players.

I'm actually glad to see that they didn't try to throw Schremp to the wolves. Let him develop, he's only 19. His play looked pretty promising in the preseason and he looks to be a player of the future for us.
