Leafs, New Jersey, Washington -- What will happen

    As reported in today's Sun:

The Devils and the Leafs are OVER the Cap ($41.46MM and $39.6MM) while the Capitals are UNDER the Floor ($20.19MM)

As you know, the cap has a floor of $21.5MM and a ceiling of $39.0MM.

If I had to guess, I would say that "penalties" will be assessed at the END of the season when the final salaries have been paid. There are a lot of teams close to the ceiling level that, if players get hurt and minor leaguer's are called up, then their payrolls will increase ...

I haven't seen this adequately explained as to what punishment exists for actually exceeding the cap and when that determination is made.

IMO, THAT will be the next 'big test' in this new NHL.

The Laffs are cap offenders! The Laffs are cap offenders!

Isn't Toronto disputing Nolan's salary, which would put them $4MM UNDER the cap? I think that is their logic, if I had to guess..

Besides, the rumour I'd heard (and can't remember if it was ever substantiated) was that players will be waived if they are NOT under the cap by opening night, so we may yet see some movement if that is true.

What's going to happen to Washington?

How do you penalize a team for being under the floor?

I mean, there has to be something, obviously, but I don't have a clue what...

Wow, the Caps went from having a roster full of overpayed guys to an under the floor salary. Cant see them being penalized for that. Whens the last time you heard management tell a team to start spending more or else.

Maybe the league will waive Nolan onto the Cap's roster
I thought I wanted a career; turns out I just wanted paychecks.

Indeed........his is a unique case that was not thought out by the NHL when they instituted the new CBA.

How are the Devils so far over?

I guess they should sent the top paying salaries in TO and NJ of to the Caps. Give them a bunch of overpaided old guys as a punishment.
