As reported by Nik Kypreos. Deal is in place, and will be completed September 1st... after the Leafs pay McCabe $2,000,000 in signing bonuses.
Van Ryn is a decent 2nd pairing guy (much like McCabe), however he is coming off of major surgery on both of his wrists. In all likelihood he is a noticeable downgrade from McCabe.
McCabe has 3 years left @ 5.75 cap hit, but only 4.15 salary... likely why he appealed to the Cats.
Meanwhile Van Ryn has two years left @ 2.9 cap hit and 3.35 salary.
Obviously money isn't an issue in Toronto, but it's an expensive move. I'm also unsure how the signing bonus will affect the Leafs this season... but I'm pretty sure it counts as $2,000,000; which means the Leafs will be paying Van Ryn the same as they'd have paid McCabe this season, $2,000,000 less next season and nothing in the last season.
