Bettman is an extension of the owners...you want to get mad at someone...it's not Bettman...

      They ALL are.

      Including Daryl Katz.

If he doesn't fight this thing tooth and nail, he's letting a billionaire with no affiliation to the NHL dictate how the league does business. Whether its the NHL, NFL, MLB or the convenience store on the corner, allowing someone else to dictate how you run your business is a bad idea.

Agreed 100%......I'm no fan of Bettman in general, but I can't understand why everyone seems to have this appreciation for Balsillie....?!? He has been and is his own worst enemy in trying to secure Hamilton a franchise.

Balsillie offered to buy the Coyotes (and other teams) previously and followed the same procedure as the people the NHL has approved. These guys didn't get approved as owners before making their bids for the teams. Bettman just doesn't want a team in Hamilton because the Leafs don't want it and because it would hurt the Sabres. Furthermore, Bettman is trying to make the NHL into something that it can not and should not be. Beyond that, they could have easily accommodated Balsillie. They just didn't want to. A simple, "Jim, you need to go through this process to get approval" would have worked. Instead they just slammed the door.

That's probably half of it. The other half is that the owners don't want to see a franchise go into the hockey hotbed of Ontario for the price Balsillie is offering. A franchise in that market is worth $350 mil, so if Jimbo buys the Coyotes for 200 mil and moves them there, it sets the franchise value bar lower for the other owners (so they think).

I don't think you'd get unanimous support from all the other owners (especially if a team in Hamilton would increase overall league revenues across the board) if it was as simple as you are making it out to be.
This is no less than the third time JB has tried to muscle his way into the league with his riches and dictate what and how he was going to do without any form of league approval.....for this reason it would seem the league has had enough of this guy and just don't want him in their club.
