NBA tells refs to influence games...?

    http://deadspin.com/5392067/excerpts...nt-you-to-read

Sticking to our pregame pledge, each of us whistled Iverson for palming in the first quarter — we all wanted in on the fun. The violations seemed to affect Iverson's rhythm and he played terribly that night, shooting 5-for-19 with five turnovers. After getting repeatedly whistled all night long, Iverson approached me in an act of submission.
Of course, Stafford had some friends in the league, too. I worked a Knicks game in Madison Square Garden with him on February 26, 2007. New York shot an astounding 39 free throws that night to Miami's paltry eight. It seemed like Stafford was working for the Knicks, calling fouls on Miami like crazy. Isiah Thomas was coaching the Knicks, and after New York's four-point victory, a guy from the Knicks came to our locker room looking for Stafford, who was in the shower. He told us that Thomas sent him to retrieve Stafford's home address; apparently, Stafford had asked the coach before the game for some autographed sneakers and jerseys for his kids. Suddenly, it all made sense.
My favorite Tommy Nunez story is from the 2007 playoffs when the San Antonio Spurs were able to get past the Phoenix Suns in the second round. Of course, what many fans didn't know was that Phoenix had someone working against them behind the scenes. Nunez was the group supervisor for that playoff series, and he definitely had a rooting interest.

Nunez loved the Hispanic community in San Antonio and had a lot of friends there. He had been a referee for 30 years and loved being on the road; in fact, he said that the whole reason he had become a group supervisor was to keep getting out of the house. So Nunez wanted to come back to San Antonio for the conference finals. Plus, he, like many other referees, disliked Suns owner Robert Sarver for the way he treated officials. Both of these things came into play when he prepared the referees for the games in the staff meetings. I remember laughing with him and saying, "You would love to keep coming back here." He was pointing out everything that Phoenix was able to get away with and never once told us to look for anything in regard to San Antonio. Nunez should have a championship ring on his finger.
Read it all... there's a lotta bombshells inside, and even if only half of them are true...
"This year, we did what we were supposed to do. We fought as a team. We fought as a team. And the fact is, we gotta go back and go to work, to make sure we finish this next time. That's all we gotta do. This right here makes us stronger. Let's understand who we are as a team. Let's understand this right here makes us stronger." - Ray Lewis, January, 2012.

It is becoming a well-known fact that NBA officials are among the shadiest in any sport anywhere in the world.. Remember the Donaghy case from a couple of years ago...?

The book is by Donaghy. That case against him ended up with him telling all.

Yeah- I gather that now.. I didn't read the beginning of the thread as I was dropping in.

Prettty trippy stuff.. At the time I remember him sort of alluding to the fact that he had damning info about other NBA referees.. Looks like the other shoe finally dropped..

Well if there is one good thing, at least our refs aren't that shady.....they're just incompetent!

Interesting that it was the Riders who moaned and bitched for a salary cap, and since a cap was put in place for them, they only years they've won they broke the salary cap rules.

I guess I won't be buying this book since it's not out yet, and it's publisher just backed down and cancelled.

I think if these quotes are real, that someone will pick up the publishing, even if the NBA is threatening to sue.

There are a couple great legends regarding David Stern's propensity for fixing games. One that sticks out the most is Game 6 of the 2002 Western Conference Final between the Lakers and the Kings. LA should have been bounced that night, but the refs made a mockery of the sport in giving the Lakers 27 4th quarter free throws to only 9 for the Kings. Donaghy has publicly said he was told that game was fixed "for the good of the league", as there was money to be made in a game 7, as well as better TV ratings if the Lakers advanced.

Game 3 of the 2008 finals was handled in a similar way. Celtics up 2-0 in the series and looking like they would sweep the Lakers easily, until they get a large free throw advantage and some particularily bad reffing in game 3 to help them get back into the series.

The common denominator in both games is Bennet Salvatore. According to rumors, he is the one Stern sends in when he needs something like this done. Fascinating stuff.

Edit: Sorry, it's Dick Bavetta thats Stern's guy, not Salvatore.

Stopped watching the NBA years ago when it was plain as day that guys like Jordan could travel at will and never get called. When it's obvious to that degree that elite players can play outside the rules, I have little interest in the product...

If anyone comes forward to corroborate Donaghy's stories, this will be more damaging to the NBA than the steriod allegations were for Major League Baseball. Imagine reading those exerpts as a Sacramento Kings fan, or a Phoenix Suns fan, or a Philadelphia 76ers fan. Knowing that bad reffing potentially cost you a championship is bad enough, but knowing that the league RIGGED it that way?

Someone brought up Flutie's fumble in 1996. I still honestly believe that was a mistake on Jake Ireland's part...but imagine finding out that he had a stake in the Argos winning the Grey Cup? I'd be crushed.
