Yankees: Fan at Fenway takes a swipe at Sheffield

    by Fanball Staff - Fanball.com
    Friday, April 15, 2005

    News
Yankees outfielder Gary Sheffield and a Red Sox fan were involved in a brief altercation Thursday night at Fenway Park. In the eighth inning, Sheffield was attempting to field a Jason Varitek double when the fan hit him in the face with an uppercut that appeared to be intentional. Sheffield responded with a shove before throwing the ball back to the infield. He then turned around and cocked his fist back, but restrained himself before throwing a punch. He and fan exchanged words before Fenway Park security intervened. The fan was ejected from the game but was not arrested, according to ESPN News.

IMO, any fan who physically attacks (or trys to attack) any pro player should be charged with assault and then locked in a cell with some dude who's willing and able to shove the assaulters teeth to the back of his throat in more than one way!

It is complete BS the liberties "fans" are taking with pro athletes...they are paid to take a lot of verbal abuse through the fans and media but at no point in time should an athlete be physically abused by a fan. It would be a horrible injustice if this MORON who swung at Sheffield doesn't get jail time.

I agree... A fan paid his way in there so he has the right to heckle, boo, cheer whomever he wants.. but when it turns physical he should be charged.

I agree.....the fans responsibility is to stand his ground and make it impossible for the opposition to snag any fly balls or grounders that start to fly over into the stands. That is all....(well you should interfere with any grounders and stuff too that skirt the walls if the opposition is at bat - give them a ground rule double instead of a possible triple)
Before you insult a man, walk a mile in his shoes. That way, when you insult him, you'll be a mile away, and have his shoes.

If you're on the wall at a baseball game, I agree ...and you should also NOT touch any ball hit by the opponent that your fielder might be able to get (*cough*CUBS FAN*cough ).

But you shouldn't be assaulting the opponent...that's, well, that's assault.

I think it's safe to say you're not gonna find anyone around these boards who are going to side with the "fan" in this case. Assault is assault. Unprovoked, at that!

The fan should be allowed to be punched in various body parts once by each member of the team he did something to. Now that would be entertainment.

To me, it looked like he was taking a swipe for the ball.

If it was meant to be a punch then it was a pretty weak punch.

Yeah, after seeing it on TV, it didn't look all that bad. The guy had horrible timing in his swipe for the ball ...but it didn't look like a very hard swing.

That said, it still isn't good, and I wonder if some Yankee fans won't have that in mind next time the BoSox come to town. Luckily the walls at Yankee Stadium are higher.
