    Rus vs Swe

    Just started watching the Game..................
They are playing in a small community venue with almost no seating........That is a total joke for the World Junior Championship.
Maybe 500 seats if they are lucky.
    Who organized this?????????

Dwyer Arena on the campus of Niagara U actually seats 1,400 but you have to wonder why they couldn't find a second arena with more capacity? The attendance whenever the USA is the host is usually crappy and the only reason that the crowds at the HSBC Arena are quite large is due to the influx of Canadian fans from southern Ontario.....

I wonder if they approached Rochester. 2 hrs away, and Blue Cross Arena is about 12k IIRC.

Too many seats to filled by disinterested American fans and too far from southern Ontario.

BUffalo gpt licky by having the US and Canada in different pools. This way they can fill the stands for 2 sets of games. IF two different pools. I know here in Regina we had well of 6k for every game, and there was no team Canada or team USA in here. Goes to show why this event event makes so much money here in Canada and does nothing any where else.

Has any one heard how they are going to set it up next year in Edmonton and Calgary? I had heard that they where going to have Canada play their round robin in Edmonton and have the medal games in Calgary. Just wondering if that is true or if it is was wishful thinking from people in the Edmonton area.

This is true. As I have ranted about elsewhere, the setup is that Canada's preliminary pool is in Edmonton (10 games). The other preliminary pool and ALL of the delegation/medal round games are in Calgary (21 games).

The biggest issue is in the pricing. (lower bowl example) 10 games in EDM is $1295. 21 games in CGY is $1299, including the ENTIRE medal round.

That extra $4 goes an awful long way. Even assuming that 4 CAN games = 6 medal round games (of which CAN will be in at least 2), I see no possible way how 6 EDM prelims = 15 CGY prelims/delegation games. Blatant price discrimination by local EDM organizers (Katz Group, owners of Oil Kings), and Hockey Canada.

I have no problem with CGY getting the medal round etc. My issue is that they don't have to pay anything for it.

Although Calgary will have the more important games, Edmonton will have all the pool games. They charge premium pricing for Canada's game. Many leagues do this already for teams that are more popular. I would not be surprised if the leafs, and habs games in Edmonton are a higher ticket price then Florida and Tampa Bay. By having the cheaper price in Calgary they are trying to get more fans to the games that do not involve Canada. Like I said here in Regina, we averaged 6k per game. That looked very good in the Brant Center (capacity between 7 and 8K), but in the Dome that would look terrible.

As for the profits, I believe that those are split between the various Hockey organizations.

What you might see in the future though is cities like Calgary and Edmonton bid Seperately. They both have big buildings for team Canada's pool and other building that can be used for the non Canada pool, or you might see a place like Red Deer used.

I don't mind paying $129.50 a game to watch Canada's 4 pool games but to watch 6 other pool games with possible match-ups like Norway-Austria, for example, no thanks.......

For the world juniors now they only sell whole tournement packages (well whole city packages any way). That way you are more likely to go to Austria vs Norway, because you already have the ticket. I know here the closest they came to single game tickets was single day packages, and you still had to buy the other game for that day. I waited until right up until the last minute last year and had to buy the medal package (bronze and gold medal games). It actually makes good business sence in that aspect.

When I heard that, that really pissed me off. Why exactly are the medal rounds not in Edmonton? Strange to not have the medal round in the Capital of the province.

I would guess that it would come down to having 2 large markets, with large buildings, in on the bid. The had to split it some how so that they could fill both buildings. To have only the other pool in either Edmonton or Calgary, you are wasting a lot of seating, as there woujld be no way that they would even come close to selling out the buiding (my guess would be that the lower bowl seating would only be used in that case). You would then have to look at which buiding is bigger, so you can get more people, and therefore more money. In that case having the medal games in Calgary makes more sense as the dome is bigger then Rexal. Or it could just came down to Calgary being the lead bidder on the event and Edmonton was the "other site".

                        Which arena holds more people?

I would hold the medal round there...simple "butts in the seats" principle

Who really cares about this whole World Junior tournament?
Maciocia, Hall, Strasser, Hairston and Thorpe are finally all gone. The rest will take care of itself.

Good luck Kavis Reed and the rest of the Esks' new coaching staff!

Most of Canada! It is as far as I'm concerned the most exciting hockey tournament of the year every year!

                              Serious question?
