Questions for those who went to Trapper games

Do you intend on going to as many Cracker-Cat games as you did Trapper games? Why or why not?

I'm really pissed the Eskimos sold the Trappers....

For a community owned team, it didn't make any sense to sell a team because of ''pressure'' from the league.

Sure there weren't factors going Edmonton's way, but this team could have survived. Nobody could force them to move. The Eskimos profits covered the small losses the Trappers posted in the past 2 years. Prior to that, it was usually postive Net Incomes....

Community owned means thinking about the good for the community....that's why community owned teams like Moose Jaw, Swift Current haven't taken the Oilers offer of $5,000,000 for a WHL team.

Edmonton had the 2nd BEST baseball league in the world......now we're forced to watch something less than Single A. It was good watching the prospects, soon to be Cy young winners, MVP's, world series winners (Santana, Giambi, Kevin Brown, Devon White , etc, etc. etc.).

Heck, the Calgary Vipers paid for a short commercial asking for families willing to billet players for the months that they're playing ball.

That's bush league.

Of course to little kids, who fill up the ball-park, there will be no difference. Unless I get free tickets, I won't be going.....just not enough desire.

I'm an Eskimo fan, but they screwed up....and went for the $$$$. Sure they donated a million in football grassroots, but they took away the 2nd best baseball league in the world as well....not happy about that at all.

Yup - always a good place to work on the tan! Just kidding... Every year we try to hit at least a few games...It is an affordable, fun afternoon/night out!

Edmonton had the 2nd BEST baseball league in the world......now we're forced to watch something less than Single A. It was good watching the prospects, soon to be Cy young winners, MVP's, world series winners (Santana, Giambi, Kevin Brown, Devon White , etc, etc. etc.).

Arguable. I would say the Japanese pro league is about as good as Triple-A. And the Northern League is supposed to be equivalent to Double-A ball. Even if it's not, it won't be less than Single-A. Although I agree about watching the prospects here who were in the majors the next year, that was nice to see ...but hey, Stubby Clapp is good too .

That's how the CHL leagues survive. Nothing wrong with that, as long as the billets get paid for it. And it's not like they're paying the players all that much money to live on - I don't see anything bush about that. Especially when it's an independent league with no rich major league organization to pay for apartments/hotels.

I'll probably go to a few games (at least one vs. Calgary )...especially if there's good promotions on. I can never pass up free stuff (especially hats and the like).

They took an asset which was about to seriously devalue due to the direction of the league and made the best of it. The Trappers would not have been able to survive with no other canadian teams in the league. It would have taken a simple vote by the league BOG, who had already stated that they no longer thought Edm was viable as part of the league, to revoke the franchise. The PCL no longer wanted Edm if there was no other canadian cities to travel to. Major league teams were shying away from afiliation and the result was the shotgun marriage between the trappers and expos.

This would have left us with nothing but a huige loss for the esks. Instead we have 500k towards minor football, and we'll have a much improved facility at Clarke and we have a surplus of cash to allow the Esks to cointinue to do biz the way we've grown accustomed to.

Regina and surrounding areas used to have minor teams. They went belly up long ago but it was good ball to watch. If I was in Edmonton I would probably check that out.

1) The Trappers were surviving without any other Canadian team in the league. Still had decent crowds, in the league average range.

2) The league didn't want Edmonton there, but they could do nothing about it. They had no legal power to force/contract the Trappers.

3) The Twins shyed away from afiliation because of cold weather, because of 2 home stands cancelled in two Aprils....other than that, the weather seemed to be fine for 20 years....

4) It's doubltful that the Trappers would depreciate that much...even then, it's a community owned franchise. The Trappers would have survived for another 2 decades, based on their attendance figures. It's a shame that beautiful Telus Field will not field Triple AAA ball, which included future MLB palyers, but rather a semi-pro league which has had maybe 2-3 players to ever play in the MLB.

5) I don't know about you, but I personally won't benefit from $500,000 in football roots, nor will I benefit from needless renovations at Clarke park. I did benefit from watching quality ball though..

For me, being involved in amateur football, this money is a very good thing.

Nope, I clearly remember reading an article stating the league could not in any legal way rescinded the franchise.

The money will only benefit the hundreds or so of amateur football players.....the Trappers would have benefitted the thousands of people that walk through the turnstiles.

sure, we would have had a franchise with no players....perhaps you missed the part about not having a major league affiliate. Nobody wanted to have to travel this way due to expenses. Aside from the fact that I believe if they really wanted to they would have been able to revoke the franchise. The Eskimos came forward and gave this city an extra 3 or 4 years of Trappers baseball, otherwise it would have been sold to southern interests much earlier. You are missing the forest because of all the trees.
