    Report: Nash faces possible sanctions

Swedish team manager Claes-Goran Wallin has called on the International Ice Hockey Federation to take a second look at an incident which occurred in their qualification match against Canada over the weekend.

Wallin has submitted video evidence which shows Canadian forward Rick Nash confronting two on-ice officials during Sweden's 5-4 win on Saturday. The tape shows Nash having words with referee Vjatjeslav Bulanov following a play in front of the Swedish goal. As the play moves up the ice, Nash hooks the official from behind with his stick. When a linesman attempts to intervene, Nash turns around and appears to take a swipe at the official.

The referee did not immediately file a report concerning Nash or the incident and neither did the supervisor of the game.

An IIHF official was not aware of any request for an investigation into any incident involving Nash and Canada's game against Sweden.

"This is unacceptable. The referees are untouchable", Wallin tells the Swedish newspaper Expressen.

Asked what kind of punishment he would like to see levied against Nash, Wallin tells Expressen, "That decision is not up to me. But let me say this; A tough statement from the International Federation would be appropriate."

Nash is tied with teammate Joe Thornton for the tournament lead in scoring with 10 points and he leads the championship with eight goals.

If the refs didn't take offence to it, I don't think he should be .

Agreed. And the person supervising the game didn't have any complaints either so I don't know what makes the Swedish GM think he's the savior of the officials.

      Maybe he's trying for a pre-emptive strike

IMO its just an attempt to get our scoring threat out of the tournie so its harder for us to win...

Its just ridiculous. If the ref didn't do anything about it, when he was the one who alomst got clocked, this shouldn't be an issue. Nash probably thought there was some guy behind him trying to start a fight and apoligised immediatly. Its nothing but a cheap shot to try and take away some of Team Canada's power. (That said, I bet agianst them, soooo....) Remins me of Don Matthews giving the CFL a tape on our cornerbacks right before the Grey Cup game where they lost

That sounds like a reasonable explanation of what happened between Nash and the referee. But maybe we're wrong.. maybe the Swedish GM knows better being 200 ft above the ice with a grainy CD-ROM in his hand.

Well that was a quick response/rebuff:

                    Nash won't face IIHF sanctions

The International Ice Hockey Federation says it will not take any action against Canadian forward Rick Nash for his actions in Saturday's game against Sweden at the world hockey championship.

At the end of Sweden's 5-4 win against Canada, Nash is shown on videotape having words with referee Vjatjeslav Bulanov following a play in front of the Swedish goal. As the play moves up the ice, Nash hooks the official twice from behind with his stick. When a linesman attempts to intervene, Nash turns around and appears to take a swipe at the official.

After reviewing the incident, the IIHF concluded the contact with the official was not deliberate.

Hockey Canada officials say they were not informed of any potential action being considered against Nash following the game.

"The game sheet came in and we talked to the game supervisor and then the referee supervisor and none of them had any negative comments on the game as a whole, so they certainly didn't bring up the Rick Nash issue," said Hockey Canada president Bob Nicholson. "We're moving on, we've got a big game against the Ukraine (Tuesday) night and that's our focus."
Swedish team manager Claes-Goran Wallin submitted the video evidence, saying his intent was not to have Nash suspended but for the IIHF to come up with an appropriate response to the incident.

"We don't want to see that again, we don't like it when players attack referees," Wallin said. "That is the only thing. This has nothing to do with suspending Nash. The game was over."

For his part, Nash says he's forgotten the events of Saturday.

"It happened four days ago and we're looking forward to the game against Ukraine and my mind is set on that game," said Nash.

Nash is tied with teammate Joe Thornton for the tournament lead in scoring with 10 points and he leads the championship with eight goals.

Typical Swedes (they are pussies), now I want to watch this tournament!

I could understand the complaint if it was something done to one of their players.

Let the officials take care of themselves. If it wasn't our star player nothing would have been said.

                        Whining, crying, diving, babies!

You know why Swedes don't play football? Because diving doesn't warrant a penalty!

If you're implying what I'm thinkin', that's not a penalty but a reward.

And no I won't elaborate. MoneyGuy has a reputation for being a clean-minded individual.

Then again, maybe you're not implying what I'm thinking. In which case, ignore this post as if it never happened.
