Penguins land Thibault in deal with Chicago

Spurned by Sean Burke on Tuesday, the Pittsburgh Penguins responded by acquiring goaltender Jocelyn Thibault from the Chicago Blackhawks Wednesday in exchange for a fourth round pick in the 2006 Entry Draft.

Burke was considering an offer from the Penguins, but signed instead with the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Thibault, 30, is a restricted free agent.

He is also a veteran of 536 NHL games with a record of 227-217-68. He is coming off hip surgery that was to fix a problem that cost him 60 games in the 2003-2004 season.

The trade is the third for Thibault. He was part of the package that the Montreal Canadiens received in the Patrick Roy deal in 1995. In 1999, he was traded to Chicago in a deal that brought Jeff Hackett, Eric Weinrich and Alain Nasreddine to Montreal.

Thibault became expendable earlier in the week when the Blackhawks signed free agent goaltender Nikolai Khabibulin.

    Now there's a pile of names I can't pronounce.....
I officially retract my vote for DDS as Prime Minister. He's clearly incompetent.

Great move by the Pens, Thibault is a much better option than Burke or CuJo. And he comes relatively cheap for a good starting goalie. Also gives Fleury a little more time to develop.
I thought I wanted a career; turns out I just wanted paychecks.

When not injured, Thibault is a top goalie. Nice trade.
I told those f***s down at the league office a thousand times that I don't roll on Shabbos!

Yup I agree with the other posts, great pick up. Fleury is gonna be dominant, but this is great insurance.

Any idea what Thibault was set to make this year?

I think he was making around 3 million, so probably around 2-2.5 with the roll back.

In that case its a pretty good deal for both teams.
