Attackman Ryan Boyle, who finished the 2006 NLL season with 16 goals and 28 assists for the San Jose Stealth, is headed to a new home.
Boyle said Monday that a trade has been completed which will send the Princeton University product to New York, along with third-year defenseman Matt Alrich and goaltender Matt Vinc. In exchange, San Jose will receive the first overall pick in Wednesday’s NLL Entry Draft and former Portland goalie Aaron Bold.
A league source confirmed the deal, which will be announced Tuesday.
“I’m extremely excited to be able to play in front of lots of people that I know, and to play in place with so much history,” Boyle said. “Even though I’m not from New York, Madison Square Garden is one of those places that I’ve always admired from afar. Anyone who grew up on the east coast is drawn to this place.”
A four-time NCAA All-American and the recipient of the 2005 NLL Rookie of the Year award, Boyle recently took home an MLL title with the Philadelphia Barrage following a silver medal performance with Team USA at the 2006 World Lacrosse Championships.
Alrich played in ten games for the Stealth in 2006, netting three goals and four assists. Vinc played in just one game this season. Bold competed in three games last season, stoping 30 shots for a 78.9 percent save percentage.
A talented playmaker with a knack for finding the open man, Boyle believes that he will assume an immediate leadership role for the first-year franchise.
“As the team is now, you’ve got some players that have in been in the league before, and some that are giving it a go for the first time,” said Boyle. “I think they’re looking to me to be a leader both through voice and by example.”
The NLL Entry Draft will take place on Wednesday, September 13 at 8 p.m. EST in The Theater Lobby at Madison Square Garden.
