The Philadelphia Flyers have signed Vancouver Canucks restricted free agent forward Ryan Kesler to an offer sheet. Sources tell TSN the deal is worth $1.9 million for one season.

      Good move by Philly.

Punish Vancouver for poorly positioning themselves in comparison to the cap, I expect the same to happen to Lou.

As for alienation, sure didn't stop Tampa from trading with Philly after the Gratton sheet.

Screw that, if no one bids on RFAs out of "professional courtesy", they really aren't free agents, are they? Good on Bobby Clarke (as long as he sticks it to the CanSucks and not us )

The Canucks were offering 850,000 per season.

          Philly offered 1.9 Million.

The 'Nucks HAVE to MATCH -- and double the salary -- or only get a second rounder for compensation.

Then, at the end of the period, any other RFA going to arbitration will use Kessels stats (poor, to say the least) in their arbitration and also likely get close to $2M

This is hyperinflation...and will eff over the NHL before long. BAD MOVE Clarke.

Exactly right. It is simply ridiculous to offer an RFA like Kesler that kind of coin. Clarke has made a move that looks to be done out of spite for the CBA. An offer sheet to an RFA hasn't been done in 8 years, and it tended to be elite players (Sakic, Fedorov).

That being said, as long as it is only 1 year, it shouldn't have a lot of bearing in arbitration.

"Everyone says it's causing salaries to go up. That's crap. We've all got salary caps and if it is true it drives up salaries, well, doesn't Boston signing (Zdeno) Chara to a $7 million deal or Chicago signing (Martin) Havlat to a $6 million deal drive up salaries, too? Give me a break."

So in other words: "Boston and Chcago being stupid entitles me to be stupid too, so shaddup!"

All teams like this will do is hurt themselves. The cap will remain and if they want to spend half the cap on 4 guys then..hey! Go right ahead.

At least Boston and Chicago spent it on top line players, not $2 million for a mediocre 10 goal scorer.
I thought I wanted a career; turns out I just wanted paychecks.

Alot of upside, Kesler will score 20 this year. Plus he game is pretty good overall, it's not like all he does is score goals. I love this move by Clarke, and I loved what he had to say.

So ten more "potential" goals is worth a million dollars. OK you and the islanders owner should hang out more.

So are goals everything in hockey? Kesler is a great 2-way forward and he's only 22, meaning he's going get alot better. Hell I wouldn't be surprised if he turns into a 25-25 guy soon. Is Pisani and his 37 points worth 2.5 million? No but his 2 way play and big game play earned it for him. Is Ryan Smyth worth the 3.5 million he signed after a 59 point campaign? I wouldn't say so, but he brings more to the table than just scoring. Clarkes looking towards he future, he just lost Keith Primeau and needs a replacement. I

There's the argument right there, Kesler hasn't proven a thing yet. The market was already set for a guy like him (multi-year deal with an increasing pay scale). You just don't dump millions of dollars in his lap for one year of potential and HOPE he fulfills it. Where's the logic in that?
