CFL MOP Mike Reilly?

BY DARREN POPOWICH @d_pop13

The annual call for the Calgary Stampeders, Bo Levi Mitchell to be the most outstanding player award recipient has begun in 2016. Yet, knowledgeable CFL fans must question why Mike Reilly of the Edmonton Eskimos is not being considered for the same honor with such vigor? The argument for Mitchell is often that he is a winner and he is. Nevertheless, the counter argument is that wins and losses should more attributed to team rather than individual play. While leaders like Mitchell and Reilly can rally an offense towards a win it still takes solid three phase team play to achieve a positive result. As such, one cannot objectively measure the play of quarterback on wins and losses.

CFL fans must ask what constitutes an MOP season? Comparing Mitchell and Reilly is difficult, because they have such different styles of play. Mitchell is more conservative, while Reilly is more caviler and that impacts the design of the offense they run respectively. However, for most CFL fans a CFL quarterback needs to be a passer first, a good decision makers second, lead by example third and finally be a momentum changer. Only quarterbacks with all four attributes should be considered for CFL MOP.
