    DDS' Excellent Oscars Thread

    Best Picture

    Who Will Win: Babel
    Who Should Win: The Queen
Where Oscar Screwed Up: By not nominating Thank You For Smoking or Pan's Labyrinth. As much as I liked Little Miss Sunshine, this movie certainly isn't Best Picture material. And as good as the performances are in Babel (they are outstanding), the material is weak, manipulative and contrived. The movie goes off the rails in the end. The Queen is my pick for the Best Picture of 2006.

    Best Actor

    Who Will Win: Forrest Whitaker
    Who Should Win: Forrest Whitaker
Where Oscar Screwed Up: They didn't.

    Best Actress

    Who Will Win: Helen Mirren
    Who Should Win: Helen Mirren
Where Oscar Screwed Up: They didn't.

    Best Supporting Actor

    Who Will Win: Alan Arkin
    Who Should Win: Mark Wahlberg
Where Oscar Screwed Up: They didn't.

    Best Supporting Actress

    Who Will Win: Jennifer Hudson
    Who Should Win: Rinko Kikuchi
Where Oscar Screwed Up: They didn't.

    Best Director

    Who Will Win: Martin Scorsese
    Who Should Win: Paul Greengrass
Where Oscar Screwed Up: They didn't. Its time Scorsese won an Oscar dammit! Even though I truly believe that Greenegrass' fantastic handling of United 93 is more Oscar-worthy.

So, minimal controversy this year? Glad we got that wrapped up so soon. With a little time to spare too.

I was pissed when I saw that Children of Men was on this year's movie list, and yet wasn't nominated for Best Picture. It is ten times better than Little Miss Sunshine. I also think Thank You for Smoking should have nominated instead of Flags of Iwo Jima.

...and the only one there I disagree with you is with Best Supporting Actor...Eddie Murphy has won a lot of awards for his performance

Worthy of Best Picture? One of the worst of the year.

Well, it was pointless for one thing. Totally pessimistic for another. Finally, the performances were laughable.

                          Picture: The Queen
Hon Mention - Letters of Iwo Jima

I prefered Letters, but I felt this year to be fairly weak overall. None stand out to me as being really deserving.

                          Actor: Forest Whitaker

It won't even be close, though both Gosling and O'Toole were fantastic. Very strong category, making Eckhart's nomination snub almost reasonable.

                          Actress: Helen Mirren

                          Again, it won't be close.

                          Supporting Actor: Djimon Hounsou-Blood Diamond

Upset, but Wahlberg has to make up for how bad an actor he was earlier in his career.

Supporting Actress: Haven't seen most of this films, so I won't bother picking a winner

Director: Scorsese, though I again won't be so choked if he doesn't win. IMO, he deserved his previous nominations, but only this year does his deserve to win. Okay, maybe for Raging Bull, but not over Rain Man, not over Dances with Wolves (I hated Goodfella's disgusting glorifications of violence, which were only repeated in Casino ), and certainly not over The Pianist or Million Dollar Baby.

If Letters takes it, I won't mind.

Foriegn: I mainly just want to include this category because I feel Joyeux Noel was perhaps the best film I saw this year, and was robbed for not being nominated.

They could / should have stayed more to the book...

It was "okay". Then again, I was hammered when I saw it. I was fascinated by the prospect that man kind would NEVER be able to reproduce, and then you find the pregnant chick....

It held me for parts...but the abrupt ending was weird. It was a good movie, but NOT "best picture of the year" material to me.
