Radar/Laser Detectors in the city
Did a little research and what I'm seeing is that most cops use laser so radar/laser detectors don't do much in the city, even against photo radar.

I'm with E4E; there is an easy way to avoid getting tickets. Slow down. Do like they do in Saskatchewan. There is no point getting anywhere fast because the next place isn't any better than where you are now, so why bother speeding.

They simply picked the wrong car from their trap.....even though the cops notes said that he radioed to pull over a (car of a different colour), it didn't matter.......between the judges and cops, they can basically screw up all they want.....

laser traps are stationary tripod types that use lidar ( not the sci fi laser that people assume) that is more focused than Ka radar.
As in anything if you are the lead car coming up to a stationary trap, they will wait until you have little or no reaction time before turning the gun on.
With a good radar detector ( Bel RX65 for instance) if you are travelling in a group of cars and get a quick laser alert, react immediately. It means that a vehicle ahead of you has gotten hit and your detector has caught a bit of fragmentation of the lidar signal. Very few things on the streets false on lidar.
There are units from Bel and Passport that are permanent mount style units that have laser diffusers installed front and rear over your lic plate. Because police are trained to aim the laser lidar gun at a plat surface to get a proper return to the gun, your lic plate is their first target. These "laser pro" systems are expensive but work well. Again if you are the lead car, you still might get nailed due to a reaction time issue.
The newest toys the cops use is POP radar and Ku band radar. POP is a more focused radar band but is less accurate so in traffic, police will "pop" cars and radio ahead to a normal radar trap location to target a vehicle that was picked up on POP as to be speeding. This is effective but if your unit is POP capable again you can beat it. They can't issue you a ticket using POP, because it's not accurate to stand up in court.
Ku band is another type of K band radar used in eurpoe for many years and now is being introduced here.
Photo radar is a camera system used in conjunction with a regular Ka gun used at a 40 degree angle accross the road. This shallow angle means less distance in picking it up, but they need to determine your speed prior to passing the photo vehicle.
There are new detectors that now are starting to employ GPS technology that use a data base to alert you to all fixed position photo/red light cameras all over N. America. You can also plot in GPS way points of favorite police hot spots. This way you get a GPS alaert everytime you are approaching a existing or added fixed position regardless if there is radar or not.I will not, for a moment longer, support an organization who chooses to cowardly kneel where they once fiercely & proudly stoodComment

It may have happened to you, Opus. And that's both unfair and unfortunate. Perhaps enough to get a real lawyer involved. But, yours is the first such incident I've ever heard of. It does not convince me that I'm going to get a ticket even if I don't speed.Comment

How much of the EPS budget is made up from traffic tickets? Or does it go into general revenues of the AB Government? How much is paid to the photo radar company.
On the assumption that the EPS keeps a good portion of the traffic fine infraction revenue, then I'm ALL for penalizing those who break the law.
Yes...some radar traps are cash grabs.
But if a good portion of the EPS budget is made up from photo radar revenue, would you RATHER see property tax increases to cover off the decline in EPS budget if photo radar is eliminated?
In this hypothetical scenario, why should people who DON'T speed be forced to pay higher taxes?Comment
