Conservatives Attempt to Bankrupt the Opposition! Another Election Coming??

Here's the scoop, folks...


The Finance Minister today tabled the fall fiscal update. They are predicting a small surplus for the overall fiscal year (April 08-March 09). They lost 100 million in August and 400 million in September. So far they are up 800 million for the fiscal year which is half over.

They plan on limiting pay raises for public servants, including MPs. They plan on selling over 2 billion in public assets, and........

Eliminating the taxpayer subsidy to political parties.

This is a measure that would save 30 million.

The biggest losers would be the Conservatives, as they stand to lose 10 million. But....the subsidy only amounts to 37% of their revenue.

The Bloc relies on it for over 80%. The Liberals over 60%. The NDP over 50%.

Now, the subsidy ($1.95 per vote if you got 2% or more) was the replacement for the union, corporate and individual donations over $1000 that were banned by the Chretien Liberals 5 years ago. Now the subsidy will be gone, leaving only one party able to raise the kinds of funds that make them able to fight elections: the Conservatives.

The opposition say that they will vote against. If the Conservatives make it a confidence vote then we could be back at the polls after Christmas.

The opposition has a choice of bankruptcy or election.

No problem....I will be more than happy to keep giving the Conservatives a big FU by continuing to vote for the opposition if they keep calling an election.

Smart, but corrupt...it's why I hate politics. The government should be finding smart ways of cutting government spending in this time of economic crisis, and not using it for political gains.

I'm not sure what to think. I kind of liked the subsidy system. It ensured that a vote for a party that didn't win anything actually meant something.

But, part of me thinks that if the people en masse don't support a party by donating in small amounts, then why should they be artificially propped up.

If the Conservatives don't back down via some sort of public backlash, then the choice is bankruptcy or election.

Can Harper not play nice with others? Does he need the entire sandbox to himself?

I'm not upset with the way he has been running things so far (it has been so quiet anyway) but another election right now would be a huge waste.

Following Alberta's lead, the federal Conservative Reform Alliance Party is working towards a single-party system. Good news if you know someone in politics and you're in business. Just don't get on their bad side.

P.S. Please stop calling them Tories. They aren't the same party.

Seems like a good move by the Conservatives.... either handicap the other parties, or call an election is called that likely gives them a majority...

Well essential Harper knows that this will hurt the parties either way... so yeah I would say that whatever happens is the result of Harper and Conservatives... now whether you want to praise him or crucify him is up to each individual.

I'm not disagreeing.

But if the conservatives had a majority, they could do this...and it wouldn't "force" an election.

That would be the decision of the minority parties to do so.
