But if the conservatives had a majority, they could do this...and it wouldn't "force" an election.

That would be the decision of the minority parties to do so.
Not much of a decision. Although I know nothing of this, the way DDS puts it, it sounds like the Cons are putting them into a choice between election and bankruptcy. What choice do they have?
Out of my mind; back in five minutes.

Maybe the other parties should be getting out and working for the support of Canadians who agree with their principles and policies. I have never been in favour of taxpayers paying money to political parties. They should be able to support themselves through their members and supporters donations.

This is tactically BRILLIANT on the part of the conservatives.

But I'm even MORE GLAD that it will nearly deep-six the Bloc... The fact that nearly 80% of the budget for those seperatist *******s comes from this arrangment pisses me off to no end.

Word this morning that Chretien and Broadbent are trying to broker a deal whereby the Conservatives get defeated and the Opposition forms a new government.

Now, they would need the Bloc.

Recipe for self-destruction: form a government with the help of the BQ.

I sort of agree with this, but the subsidy system does have 2 useful purposes.

              1. It replaces the now banned individual, corporate and union donations over $1000. That ensures that our parties aren't bought by fat cats.

              2. It balances out our single-member plurality electoral system, which is the most effective system we can use (sorry PR pushers) as long as we have a fused executive and legislative branch. This way if you vote for a smaller party, they get the subsidy as long as they get 2% of the vote. This makes voting for a smaller party worthwhile and that's healthy for our democracy.

I have no problem with them making this move if they actually also took the bigger and more important step of addressing the taxation issue. The fact that you get much more benefit from contributing to a political party than a charity has been a problem for me for as long as I can remember.

The timing of this was foolish however and potentially very risky. Can you imagine? Good morning prime minister Dion.

The other big gamble is that if there was another election forced because of this that canadians would be smart enough to see that the action on this which is not a major major money saving action in the grand scheme of things is what in fact causes an election call.

I hate to interrupt everyone's anti-Bloc tirade, but what you're completely ignoring is that it would kill all the other opposition parties as well.

                  Then we have a dictatorship.

Absolute power corrupts absolutely. I would absolutely be opposed to bankruptcy for the Bloc if it meant every other opposition party goes bankrupt as well.

Well, step up and donate to your favorite party then. It's not like the Cons will be playing by different rules than anyone else. If Conservative voters open their wallets to support the party and the other parties supporters don't, they deserve to go bankrupt.

The Bloc have a much greater chance of bankruptcy than the others. If it looks like the Liberals will go down, the public on the left will support them.

That is my problem with this.

This issue is not a huge deal for Canadians. It doesn't need to be addressed at this time.

It is being done solely to trigger an election.

There is a lot more to the plan than just cutting public funding for political parties. The opposition parties have apparently chosen that hill to die on however.

This will go over badly. Taking out the party that was just elected by forming an alliance with a separatist party? Digging up those old fossils Chretien and Broadbent to "rescue the country"? Voters will not look kindly on this.

The Conservatives don't want an election. In fact, they are banking on the opposite.

And yet this action, not a huge one in the grand scheme of things is something that most prudent people would see could cause an election. I don't think Harper and the boys are that dumb.

What i think this is, is the old politcal ploy of seeing an oppotunity to cram things that the government wants to do through when they see a weakness or distraction. The economy is suddenly bad, we have to cut back now is our chance to do something that we would not normally be able to get away with.

The Repubs did the same thing on a much much larger scale after 9/11. Cramming alot of things in that were their pet agendas on the fear of terrorism.
