    Heave Steve in 2015....

    Disgusting....

    http://www.ctvnews.ca/canada/after-v...88381481237582

Just days after the funeral of a Canadian veteran who died of suicide on Christmas Day, her husband received a letter from Veterans Affairs saying the family must repay a portion of her monthly disability cheque.

The letter, dated Jan. 9 -- a day after retired Cpl. Leona MacEachern’s husband publicly revealed that her death was in fact a suicide -- expresses condolences to the family while asking for a repayment of $581.67.

In an email to CTV News, Tom MacEachern called it “a slap in the face.”

“(I) didn’t know whether to laugh or cry…was breathless actually,” he said.

The letter from Veterans Affairs begins with: “We have recently been advised of the death of Mrs. MacEachern. Our most sincere sympathy is extended to you and your family at this time.”

It goes on to say that “Earnings Loss benefits paid under the Canadian Forces Members and Veterans Re-establishment and Compensation Act are payable up to the day of Mrs. MacEachern’s death.

“Therefore, an overpayment of $581.67 has been created for December 2013.”

The letter says the family will be contacted by the “Overpayment Unit in the near future.”

On Tuesday, the office of Veterans Affairs Minister Julian Fantino told CTV News that the decision to collect the money has been reversed.

“Minister Fantino has directed the department to not collect any money from the estate or the family of Mrs. MacEachern,” it said in a statement.

“He sends his deepest condolences to MacEachern family during this difficult time.”

After learning of the reversal, Tom MacEachern said that if the condolences “count as an apology, then I guess we will have to accept it at face value.”

“Of course it’s a very small amount of money considering a life was lost that should have been saved,” he said in an email.

MacEachern, a 20-year veteran of the Canadian Armed Forces, died on Dec. 25, 2013 when she intentionally drove her car into an oncoming transport truck on the Trans-Canada highway near Calgary.

The 51-year-old mother had suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder.

Her husband and family were critical of the services offered to MacEachern to treat her PTSD, and said that she had slipped through the cracks of a system that barely exists.

The letter from Veterans Affairs about the $581 repayment “shows Canadians how this department trivializes the humanity of these situations,” her husband said.

Liberal veterans’ affairs critic Jim Karygiannis said the letter "only shows the callousness of this government.

“They should be ashamed of themselves. I'm just horrified.”

With a report from CTV's Richard Madan

I'm no fan of the Conservatives...but this is just administrative officiousness, and could just as easily happen under another administration.
Out of my mind; back in five minutes.

If you want to see some Liberal sheep then check out all the guys who think Justin Trudeau, with no clear policies on anything (except weed) and no real experience, should be PM.

Is Harper responsible for every decision (literally hundreds of thousands) that the gov't makes each and every year?

This message is hidden because Rayminator is on your ignore list.

Are you upset that you're on my ignore list? And why would have to wait until next year to shove me?
There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die.

Not pleased with the Conservatives. But I'll wait to see what Trudeau's policies actually are before making up my mind. While I'm in favor of legalizing pot, he'll need more than that. And if he stays dodgy, I'll vote Conservative.

Yes - because, as you may recall, he insists that EVERYTHING go through the PMO.

Well no I don't recall that but whether he wants to or not, it isn't possible.

Fear not, when Justin rises to the throne he is going to repeal all the minimum sentencing guidelines in Canada etc. etc. and put the West in its place but at least we will be able to smoke a doobie on the lawn of the House of Commons so it should make for some interesting press.

Texas showed quite well that mandatory minimums aren't effective at reducing crime. They've abandoned them and encouraged Canada not to enact them.

And to be quite frank, legalizing mary jane would be an enormously positive step. Ending the war on drugs is essential to our society's long term well being.

I am as pissed off with some things that the Conservatives have done as any other.

But on this, they did no wrong.

I can't think of a single benefits plan / pension plan / disability plan that DOESN'T collect on overpayments. This happens all the time.

So you are citing the State of Texas, which leads the civilized world in executions, as people who should be telling us how to handle our justice system? No thanks.

                        2 more points.

                        1. It is long past time that we de-criminalized Marijuana. I agree with you and Ray that we should use the Colorado model. We need the tax revenue and the billions of dollars spent on the war on drugs has been ineffective, costly and has simply enriched gang members who slaughtered innocent people including children. To that end I might smoke one with Justin and who knows, we might have a few laughs together.

                        2. Minimums were brought in for good reason. You murder someone and get three years in jail? No way, you pay for what you have done and all you have to do is ask someone whose loved one has been raped or murdered. The Conservatives have done a lot of good in terms of addressing some of these ridiculous Liberal initiatives that made a mockery of our justice system and betrayed everyday Canadians who were the victims of violent crime. In fairness, the Mulroney administration was even worse than Trudeau (the senior) in terms of that "hug-a-thug" junk.

Texas admitting that what they were doing wasn't effective is definitely something we shouldn't ignore, mate. Mandatory minimums don't do anything but create better criminals.

Well mate, mandatory minimums make sure that you pay for your crime and it certainly has nothing to do with creating better criminals. How would you justify this statement?
