Anyone have experiences with central A/C retrofitted into an older home?

Did it once in an older house (built in the 70's) and wound up changing out the furnace and a lot of the ducting needed to be patched etc. After that it was awesome though.
We put it into our duplex built in 07 and it was the best money we'd spent on it. Like the furnace it's on a timer/temp setting so if it gets too hot during the day when we're not there it kicks on for a bit, otherwise it fires up about 20 minutes before we get home from work. We definintely notice the difference on the power bills though. Still cheaper than buying some of the R2-D2 ones that can be put in different rooms and WAY better than the window shakers that suck power and always look like crap/are about to fall out any minute. Weiss Johnson is who we used although we got a lot of quotes from around the city. (Costco, Rona etc) They were at the top end of the scale but the service was worth it.Once an Eskimo, ALWAYS an Eskimo.Comment

probably will have to change out the furnace to make it work and as Boydo said there is some retro fit ducting that will be required but should all be contained right by the furnace. I had AC installed last summer and am LOVING it right nowOriginally posted by Diesel View PostComment

We have a house built in the 70s and redid the furnace and AC a few years ago. SOunds like we lucked out and did not have to do any duct work. I would recommend you redo the furnace and the AC at the same time. You can get a much more efficient furnace and have the AC right with it. We got our tankless free and then had a buddy do the install. It's amazing...can run dishwasher, washing machine and have a shower and not run out of hot water at all. Or if we have to have both showers running they can both keep up with the demand with everyone not worried about running out. (Tested when we had a bunch of family here and everyone had to get ready for the wedding at the same time)Once an Eskimo, ALWAYS an Eskimo.Comment

Was very frustrated with our navien tankless hot water tank, kept breaking down. I had replaced almost every part in it before they finally sent me a whole new unitComment

My House was built in 1906. Our Furnace and AC were both 20 + yrs old. Replaced them this year with a Lennox High Efficiency my electric bills were easily halved I had the guys redo the Runs as well so instead of 6500 (Its nice to know the Sales Rep for Eastern US and Canada) it was 7700 but well worth it..Originally posted by Diesel View Post
