    Murder city!

Don’t know how many of you are aware of this, but Edmonton is the city of champions for more than its sports teams.

So far this year, Edmonton has more murders than CALGARY (10) AND VANCOUVER (EIGHT) COMBINED! Edmonton has 19 murders so far this year, compared to 11 last year when it set a record of 28 murders for the year. Edmonton’s per-capita murder rate is almost the same as New York City. Another citizen lost his life in a Mac’s robbery the other day. Drugs and gangs are taking over the entire capital region and we all have cause for alarm.

Scares the crap out of me. Food for thought.

Yeah it sure is unfortunate. I don't like it but this serial killer and all these murders are tarnishing our citys image when Edmonton at the moment is experiencing unprecedented growth. That's what others should focus on, unfortunately, people only remember the bad things.

The cops are under funded in our city. It is one of the reasons they can't respond to the calls you guys are complaining about.

Interesting letter to the editor the other day. A paramedic was complaining he no longer has clean uniforms as he is working 7 days a week responding to all the knifings and shootings.

An Edmonton police inspector also made a good comment, he said in his day you would fight a guy then help him up at the end of it. And then the two would remain friends for the rest of their lives.

Whereas what occurs now is after a person loses a fight, he returns later with three friends.

We need to tighten immigration in this country.

Damn near everyone whose been killed in this city had it coming. Their has been 4 or 5 hookers killed, and 4 or 5 gang bangers / dealers killed. If your involved in those lifestyles no one should be surprised if you get killed. That sort of 'job' has risks that most upstanding people don't have to deal with. IE// I don't really have to worry about getting killed and dumped on an acreage when I go to work at a machine shop everyday.

Most of the other murders involve people who knew each other. Not random acts of violence. The 50 yo woman who got killed, is a sad story, but the victim and murderer knew each other, so it hardly makes me fear for my life. Just like when a dealer gets capped, it doesn't scare me. Why? Because I'm at home, sleeping at 3 am instead of selling crack to addicts.

And the guy at Mac's who got murdered, I hate to say it, but its his own damn fault. When you go to work at a convenience store the first thing they say is don't EVER confront a robber. And they tell you that over and over. Just give up the money and let the bad guy go.

Why be scared? We aren't having a rash of random acts of murderous violence.

A few innocent people have been hit and it is only a matter of time before others fall as well.

Wow... well, it still not as bad as Detroit atleast.

They have the record for 268 homicides in a year I believe.

I thought Regina led the country in per capita murders. I think we had 7-9 so far this year. Which is still not good for a city of only 190,000

I think we need to be much more stringent in who we decide to let in, not to totally close off immigration. There are too many people being allowed in who have little education, no skills, and lack any knowledge in English and/or French. My parents worked hard to at least bring some skills and the ability to speak English when they immigrated here.

In a sense I do agree. I just finished Anthropology 150 which is Race and Racism in Modern World, and alot of the focus was on the importance of multiculturalism. And I point that I brought up is that its all good and well to allow slighted human beings from unfortunate situations (and there are many of them) to come to Canada, but immigration needs to be a two way street, while Canada can offer these people a new lease on life, the country needs to get a certain degree of return from these people. We cant accept people who are inevitably going to land up on the streets, and no better off than before they immigrated. Its a controversial issue, and none of us will make friends with this kind of topic, but we need to look towards changing policies.
I told those f***s down at the league office a thousand times that I don't roll on Shabbos!

                          Ridiculous comment.

Take a look around you....Canada is very diverse and multicultured.

Blaming immigrants for the murder problem is ridiculous.

Who says immigrants are landing on the streets? Any source to back up that claim?

I'll say this: Immigrants are the hardest working people out there, working multiple jobs.

Their degrees in other countries are sometimes worthless...juggling family, work, learning a different language, isn't easy...but it gets done.

                              Everyone starts somewhere....

Although English was a course for my mom in India, her english was minimal. It took time, and now she's speaking fluently...

Based on my experience with immigrants, everyone takes the time and effort to learn the language....

It's usually the older generation that don't bother learning another language, as they are usually only here to support their family...but even then, most of the older generation can speak english when needed.

With regards to skills, that's how you start life in a new country. Engineers from foreign countries start as Cab drivers while learning the new language and taking classes at NAIT/U of A. I have 2 recent cousins who immigrated here.....one has a denistry degree, while the other has an Accounting degree....and will become a Chartered Accountant. They are both working at Wendy's and Sobey's respectively...in order to earn money to start a lifestyle in Edmonton...

Point: It may appear on surface that some immigrants have no skill...but in reality most do...

Again, I have first hand experience with regards to immigrants, as I have seen about 30-40 members of my family immigrate to Edmonton...all of them have made a successful living here, and all of them took only 1-3 years to fluently speak English.

That said, next time you hear someone speak in their native language doesn't mean they dont' know english....it's just that they prefer to keep their culture....
