Is this something they're considering? I like the idea of making every team earn their points, and raising the amount of a conceded safety would likely give us a bit more action going on. You'd have to REALLY be sure the opposing team is going to get a TD if you punted.
My question is: Wouldn't this just encourage punters to practise their "slipping" routine?
What about upping the value of a rouge if the ball is caught or is grounded in the end zone? The return game is one of the more exciting features of Canadian Football.. it would encourage returners to field the ball and especially not allow it to go into the end zone.
Morons.......nothing wrong with the tactic of doing it....
However, if they would like to discourage it some more, they should move the kickoff back to the 25 (from the present 35) yard line like it used to be.
Before you insult a man, walk a mile in his shoes. That way, when you insult him, you'll be a mile away, and have his shoes.
Four points is good idea,I hate the half the distance to the goal line,if you're caught holding on you're nine it should go back to the one. You shouldn't get a bonus because you are near your'e goal line.
Bad idea. Now we're going to have to expect officials to determine whether or not a center intentionally snapped the ball ten yards over the kickers head?
Because we all know that is what teams will be doing by mid-season.
If his moral character isn't good enough for the goddamn Saskatchewan Roughriders, it sure as hell isn't good enough for the Green and Gold.
Interesting that it was the Riders who moaned and bitched for a salary cap, and since a cap was put in place for them, they only years they've won they broke the salary cap rules.
Dumb. There is no way refs could monitor it properly. Besides, why should a team be penalized if there is a 60 kph wind in their face and strategy says to give up 2 to get better field position?
Terrible proposition. I agree with what's been said here, it'll just encourage long snappers to put ball 10 feet over the punters head. Sure, it would make it riskier of the defense recovering it....but it's never a good idea to give refs more judgment calls. Move the yard line back from where they have to kick it, and the kicker punt it instead of teeing it up, like the NFL does. It reduces the gain for field position which is what this is all about.
If the rule were changed to purposly the long snapper would just out it over the head of the kicker at the goal line. It would make no difference.
If you truly want to discourage the safety on a punt, make them free kick (punt it like the NFL, no kicking tee allowed) it from the 20. That would not punish the other team and would really make a coach think about not taking that 5 yard delay penalty at the 20 yardline.
EDIT: Numberz beat me to most of this

If you're going to change the rule at all (other than moving kickoff to the 25), I would just abolish safeties on third down. Call it a TD for the other team if you end up in your own end zone after 3rd down. After all, a change of possession there would mean a TD for the other team.

I think that would suck for blocked punts that go through the endzone, or bad snaps....a TD for that would be too much.
