This smacks of desperation. I hope the Esks are not stupid enough to give them Schiavone.
Blue Bombers Ink Dan Giancola After Five-Year Layoff
After being away from the CFL game for five years, kicker Dan Giancola has found a new home with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.
The 39-year old placekicker has signed a deal with the club after he worked out at Canad Inns Stadium weeks ago.
"I'm 39," Giancola told the Winnipeg Free Press on Tuesday. "And I know a lot of people out there are going to say, 'Oh my God... he's 39 years old. Why don't they bring in (Troy) Westwood? Why don't they bring in Bob Cameron? Why don't they bring in Lui Passaglia?' I respect that. I've been out of football since 2004. But what people don't know is the love I have for the game."
Giancola started his CFL career as a 29-year old rookie with the Toronto Argonuats in 1999, where he recorded 48 field goals and was a perfect 28-for-28 in extra points.
After the 1999 season, he was signed by the Buffalo Bills of the NFL, but he was cut before the exhibition season.
After that, he became a journeyman in the CFL, going from Toronto to the B.C. Lions, the Montreal Alouettes and then back to the Argos, where he played three games in 2004 as an injury replacement for the eventual Grey Cup Champions.
"People can say what they want and I know there are going to be naysayers," Giancola said the to Free Press. "You know what? I'd be one, too. But if anybody knows anything about me, they should know never to count me out. And I was going to keep going until I got that blessed chance again."
