Around the CFL this week:
Teams were busy this week with announcements and players signings. Here's the recap:
Montreal Alouettes
Linebacker Philippe Girard announced his retirement from football. The 31-year-old Montrealer started his career in 1998 with the Edmonton Eskimos before signing as a free agent with the Alouettes in 2003. Montreal Alouettes' General Manager Jim Popp announced that receiver Jay Chapman will be at training camp. The Montreal Alouettes are also proud to present the ninth edition of the Alouettes Junior Football Camps in Trois-Rivières.
Ottawa Renegades
The Ottawa Renegades Football Club announced the signing of two defensive players: linebacker D'Wayne Taylor and defensive back Sean Weston. The Renegades also inked Canadian fullback Lloyd Orris as well as a pair of imports - defensive back Leonard Myers and defensive lineman Michael Moncrief. The Renegades also announced that they have released four players - a pair of Americans and two Canadians - as the team continues to build its training camp roster. Linebacker Reggie Givens, running back Raymonn Adams as well as non-imports Charles Assman (linebacker) and kicker Demetris Scouras were let go by the club.
Toronto Argonauts
The Toronto Argonauts had fun on April Fool's with three separate joke announcements. First, Toronto "announced" the reality TV dreams of some of their players, including Clifford Ivory and Michael Fletcher on 'The Bachelor', Jude St. John on the next installment of 'Survivor,' Mike O'Shea on 'Fear Factor,' John Avery on 'America's Next Top Model' and the Donald himself tapping Head Coach Mike "Pinball" Clemons for the new season of 'The Apprentice.' Second, the Toronto defensive core "decided" to 'follow a dream' and trade the pain of professional football for the bright lights of live theatre, putting their 2004 dance routines to good use. Finally, Toronto Argonauts President and CEO Keith Pelley "informed" the club that effective immediately he will be stepping down from his position in order to pursue his dream of becoming a starting kicker/punter with the Boatmen.
Hamilton Tiger-Cats
As first reported on AM 900 CHML early Friday, the Hamilton Tiger-Cats Football Club "announced" its intention to submit an official proposal to the Canadian Football League asking for permission to de-merge and form two teams to play in Hamilton in time for the 2006 CFL Season. The prank even included an official logo and signage at Ivor Wynne Stadium. Later in the morning, Ticats owner Bob Young was a guest on AM 900 CHML to let fans in Hamilton in on the joke!
Winnipeg Blue Bombers
Fans of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers are joining the FREE THE FAN campaign, as more than 14,000 loyal supporters have purchased season-ticket packages. As of noon Friday, the total number of season tickets sold for the upcoming year is: 14,142. The Winnipeg Football Club's Annual Information Session & Fan Forum will take place Tuesday, April 12, 2005.
Saskatchewan Roughriders
The Saskatchewan Roughriders announced that import linebacker Johnny Anderson and import receiver Brian Robinson have signed one-year plus option contracts with the club. Financial terms were not released.
BC Lions
BC Lions quarterback Casey Printers will host his inaugural Most Valuable Football Camp, along with other NFL and CFL stars, on April 2nd. The camp is open to children ages 6-18 years and will be held at the South Surrey Athletic Park. The Felions, the BC Lions Dance Team, are looking for females with dance experience to tryout for the 2005 Dance Team. Saturday April 2, will mark the first day of tryouts.
