    Gee, What a Surprise

TORONTO -- The Grey Cup is returning to Toronto.

A CFL source requesting anonymity said Thursday the league will stage the 2012 Grey Cup at the Rogers Centre in Toronto. The CFL has scheduled a news conference for Friday afternoon to make a Grey Cup announcement.

Toronto last hosted the Grey Cup in 2007 when the Saskatchewan Roughriders defeated the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. That marked the first CFL championship game at Rogers Centre since 1992.

The move is hardly surprising. The prevailing talk has been that the CFL would stage the 2012 Grey Cup in Toronto to celebrate the game's 100th anniversary in its biggest market.

The source also said the CFL will also unveil former Canadian Olympic Committee chief executive officer Chris Rudge as its 2012 Grey Cup chairman.

Rudge is a friend of Toronto Argonauts and B.C. Lions owner David Braley and was a finalist for the CFL commissioner's job in 2002, which ultimately went to Tom Wright. Rudge was named the COC's chief executive officer in January 2003 and stepped down April 7.

There were reports earlier this month that Rudge would be named to the Grey Cup but he dismissed them as speculation.

Yay lets give the 100th greycup to a city who doesn't care about the CFL as they want the NFL franchise

And who doesn't think Braley runs the league ?

    Re: Gee, What a Surprise

From a marketing perspective, it makes sense for the CFL to hold the game there. As much as I sometimes think the good people of TO don't deserve a CFL team, without Toronto the CFL loses tons of revenue and corporate sponsorship---and probably wouldn't survive.

Let them have the game. We'll just have to make sure the Esks represent the West in 2012
Hope, at the end of the day connects us all, no matter how different we are

Not that I don't appreciate a misguided rant (come to think of it, I don't), but Toronto has been expected to be hosting this game for years... which, last I checked, was long before Braley controlled them.

And whether the people of Toronto care is debatable... but there is no debate that the advertisers/sponsors care a whole bunch about Toronto, and the CFL has been doing everything in it's power the last few years to make the event as corporate friendly as possible. So again, no surprise there.
Look. We can go round and round about this all the live long day. Let's keep it simple. I embody amazement. Can you dig on that? Good. Then meet me on the corner of rock and roll, and bring a flask of something that burns.

Of course Bradley runs the league. What other league would allow him (or anyone else) to own two teams.

The last time that TO hosted the Grey Cup it was very well attended. Now how much that had to do with Saskatchewan being in it (A lot is my guess) and how much the locals got into, I really do not know. From what I understand though it was a better experience then it had been in the past in TO. g as they do not try and over do it, I really do not see a problem with the game going back to Toronto. Also Toronto has hosted and won the most cups so having the 100th makes sense. Also as much as we hate it in Western Canada, Toronto in the center of the media universe in Canada so the CFL would be stupid not to put the 100 th cup there. Lastly we were discussing this last year, before Braley ever owned the Argos so that arguement does not wash will me. Although they do get a new owner in either BC or Toronto to get around this.

This was a slam dunk, especially with Braley taking over. should be a guaranteed money maker, even in Toronto, I think. Three straight years in the west, it only make sense to go out east to the oldest franchise not only in the country, but North America.

It's been a long time since the league basically handed the big game back and forth between Toronto and Vancouver.

We all know that the over saturation nearly killed the grand national drunk in both of those cities. However, they both rebounded in 2005 & 2007 with excellent celebrations.

Everyone knew it was going there, and I'm sure that they'll again be excellent hosts to the fans across the country.

Besides, the more games the Bills play in T.O, the more I believe that the desire to have their own NFL team is more media and corporate hype than anything. It's the kind of rhetoric that gets waved around as much as gospel west of Manitoba's eastern border as the old Rider fan whines about the Eskimos.

Not a shock and it's a good call for the league. Have the 100th game in your biggest city and on the biggest stage. It just makes too much sense.
The game will sell out too so I don't see any problems behind this.

And everyone who is saying this is Braley's doing, this was being talked about WELL before he owned both teams. It just made too much sense to have it in Toronto.

Does it really matter? Somehow I doubt they'll sell out within the first week of tickets being released. To me, it could be anywhere and I'd still want to go...just because they want an NFL franchise and NFL dollars to go with it, doesn't mean they don't deserve to get the 100th Grey Cup. Who do you think should have hosted it? Hamilton?

Those who spew hate towards Toronto merely for the sake of hate with no rationale or logic is plain ludicrous. (it's also old, tired and boring. move on already, sheesh)

Those who think this is Braley's doing are out to lunch. That the 100th GC was going to be in Toronto was the worst kept secret for a couple of years now... PRE-DATING Braley's involvement with the Argos.
Nice try on a conspiracy theory, but a swing and a miss.

edit-- and just to fully sink the Braley conspiracy theorists... there's talk that Toronto hosting the 100th GC was part of the 'package' that Cynamon and Sokolowski asked for when they bought the franchise several years ago. Braley likely knew that and it certainly sweetened the pot for him to buy into the Argos. However, that is NOT the same thing as Braley being the reason the 100th GC is going to be in Toronto. Period.

Considering that the Argos are also not just the oldest CFL team but the oldest pro sports team in North America, it seems very appropriate.

As long as the marketing aspect of it is taken care of well, combined with the fact that Torontonians will be unable to ignore the fact that fans of other CFL teams will be invading their city for GC week in 2012, it should be a successful Grey Cup. It might even bring some attention to the CFL in TO and make them forget about the NFL.
