    Preseason crystal ball gazing – Stampeders

    I’ll make this one shorter, but please feel free to add your own comments.

    On offence the Stampeders are a team of extremes this year. They have a great receiving corps and possibly the best set of RBs in the league. The Smilin’ one is in great shape and seems motivated. Having a rookie kicker will probably cost them some grey hairs and at least one game at some point this season, but overall this has the potential to be a very powerful offence ... BUT, this team could have a major Achilles’ heel, its OL. Gone are Jeff Pilon, Jesse Newman and Dimitri Tsoumpas, 3/5 of their starting OL. Ellis has started before, and Comiskey is a vet attempting a comeback, but you have to expect that this OL will have its struggles. I think this team could be first or last depending on how quickly and how well its OL can come together.

    On defence this is a veteran team. It’s not a star laden defence, but Labinjo seems rededicated, and their CBs are two of the best, and they’re a solid defence overall.

    Trivia note: I see that Jason Horton is in camp with the Stamps this year. This is his second time in the league. His first time was in 2003 but he didn’t see any game action, because he was taken off of Toronto’s practice roster by the Green Bay Packers. He’s the only player I know of who was taken off of a CFL PR by an NFL team.

    Matt Sheridan, all 383 pounds of him, has retired again. But in the preseason games, the Stamps' O-line didn't look as dreadful as everyone has been expecting. Maybe when the games are for real, they'll be exposed...or maybe they'll be OK.

      A couple of years ago the Stamps were in the same situation. Everyone was calling for their demise. Well they found some talent (with the help of the Esks) and went on to win a Grey Cup.

      The Stamps usually do a good job with their o-line and their offensive schemes cover up for weak areas.

      Sure, it could be their Achilles heel. But as the Stamps have proved, it is not guarenteed.

        I still think the Oline will be a problem but Hank has the mobility to make up for his Oline's deficiencies. Also not sold on their linebacking core though they looked good on Sunday.

          While it may not be a guarantee, I would bet the farm that the Stampeders OL will not produce the same way they did back in 2008 (Give up 30 sacks - 3rd fewest). In over 30 years of watching CFL football, I had never seen a team start two rookies on the OL and win the Grey Cup with them as starters. What the Stamps did was 'roll snake eyes' that year and I seriously doubt that they can do it again. While they may have a powerful offense, we saw what can happen to even the best QB's when they do not have time to throw the ball...

          To me it was never about what I accomplished on the football field, it was about the way I played the game.

            Agreed, this time they don't even have the luxury of two high prospects to fill deficiencies.

            As much as I like Big Commie, I can't see him staying healthy for long either.

            It'll be a concern for them all year, and if they lose Burris for an extended length because of it....then they could be down in the cellar.

              I will say; Big Commie looked awfully good during the pre-season game. The Oline actually played decently though I wasn't particularly impressed with the Riders front seven. It will be interesting to see how they do when the real bullets fly.

                What has surprised me is how Tim O'Neil never looked like he was at all ready to take the next step even as an injury roster player, has stepped right into a starters spot down there, and done a pretty decent job of it.

                  the word on Sheridan's 'Retirement' is that it is to give him a chance to get into game shape... as opposed to Amoeboid.
                  Turf Toe:
                  - "...turf toe is a common malady that is more of a nuisance than a serious injury."
                  - "Turf toe can often progress into a chronic problem..."
                  - "A mild instance of turf toe (grade 1) can be merely aggravating while a serious case (grade 3) can be debilitating."

                    Much as it pains me to say it...I think the rumours of Calgary's demise will be grossly exaggerated this year.

                    They won't light it up, but I think they'll be right in the thick of it. That month - August 15-Sept 10 - could go a long way in determining our standing, especially considering 5 of our last 8 are against East teams.

                        If Burris stays upright and healthy, I agree....

                        ...if not......well, I don't think Tate will lead them to the promised land.

                          Tate apparently looked good in Edmonton; you could expand on that. And both he and Pickett looked good against the Riders. While Hank certainly gives them the best chance to win I wouldn't necessarily say all hope is lost with either of those two.

                              Rolling snake eyes usually means bad luck. The Stamps had good luck. So that doesn't really fit.

                              If you are talking about probability, you could have just as easily had said 'roll box cars' which is the same 1/36.

                              I think what you are saying is that the Stamps were really lucky and fluked out. In that case, the appropriate colloquialism is that the Stamps had a horseshoe up their horse that year.
