Montreal Signs Former Packers Star Ahman Green

As seen on twitter from CFL Daily and
Als blockbuster Super Bowl weekend: Packers star signs
    Posted By: Rick Moffat rmoffat@cjad.astral.com · 2/4/2011 7:59:00 PM

Alouettes GM Jim Popp must be thinking Cheesehead even though his football heart is thinking Steelers.

The Alouettes have signed former Green Bay star Ahman Green, the Packers' alltime leading rusher to a tryout for 2011.

Green played in the obscurity of the UFL in 2010, hoping it would be his ticket back to the NFL. As recently as 2007 he signed a $23-million dollar deal with the Houston Texans.

The move is potentially the most dramatic at the tailback position since the Als brought Lawrence Phillips in to compete against Mike Pringle in 2002.

It comes with 2009 Grey Cup MVP Avon Cobourne a potential free agent mid-February, though Cobourne and his agent former Alouette Tim Fleiszer have told CJAD his preference is to return to Montreal.

Not sure how Green would do in the CFL and more particular in Montreal with them passing a way more then running. I can not remember how he was out of the backfield as a reciever. This could simply be a move to lower Cobourne's salary demands as they can say that they have another guy ready and waiting. If Montreal is will to have Colbourne walk then there will be a lot of teams interested in him as he is a great reciever out of the backfield and he can block in the passing game really well.

Another "washed up" NFLer comes to be a "star" in the CFL.
Maciocia, Hall, Strasser, Hairston and Thorpe are finally all gone. The rest will take care of itself.

Good luck Kavis Reed and the rest of the Esks' new coaching staff!

He had a bad injury and it really hurt him, was a very good player for the Packers his 1st time around. Hey, good move by Popp he's done it in the past with guys like Edwards, give the guy a shot and if all else fails if you have injuries in camp you have a vet player ready to step in (even if he is a new cfl player.)

If any of u were 'lucky' enough to see green play for Omaha last year, will agree when I say he has lost a step is an understatment!

Green has no business being in a league with the speed of the cfl, he will be cut before camp finishes...

Interesting move, as a Packers fan I have a soft spot for Ahman, I hope he can make the roster.

Which teams do you think will be interesting in Cobourne? Most teams are relatively set at RB and only BC and Sask have starters where questions are being asked about their age. Cobourne is a few years on the wrong side of 30 (32 in March) himself and would seemingly have some salary expectations that are on the high end.

I'm more than a little surprised that the Als would sign a 34 year old RB... just doesn't seem in keeping with Popp's normal M.O. of finding 'em young and growing them in the big Als' hydroponic lab.

Agreed gwn. I'm a little unsure as to WHY the als would sign him....

Well, the guy had 50+ receptions 4 seasons in a row for the Packers, so he obviously was working as a safety valve. If Toronto signed him, I'd laugh it off, but with it being Montreal...maybe there's something there...
Hope, at the end of the day connects us all, no matter how different we are

U can watch the ufl games on demand via their site, watch some of the nighthawks games, he really has lost his burst, IMHO he wouldn't even be useful as a short yardage back.
