    Strategy Question

Question stemming from Hufnagel, down 2 with two minutes left giving up the safety. Is that the right move, or should you punt?

My thinking is you should punt. There is really no upside to giving up the safety.

    - You have to be assuming you get a quick stop, cause any kind of sustained drive and game is over. BC didn't even need a TD to end it, 2 or 3 first downs does it as long as they don't do anything stupid. So whether you give up the safety and get them back on their own half, or punt and only back them up to the 40-45 doesn't really matter. You gotta get the quick stop or it's over.

    - You get the stop and give up the FG you're really no worse off down 5 then you are down 4. Either way you need a major. And your field position isn't likely to be much different either way (Give punt and up the FG, scrimmage from the 35... or giving up the safety they ended up on the 37, and it would have been a 22 if LaRose didn't take a dumb penalty).

    - Or get the stop and don't give up any points (or give up a single) and you only have to get in FG range and kick for the win/tie... and that option is off the table entirely with the safety.

So, it seems to me giving up the safety has no upside in this situation. Where as punting there is still a change you can win it with a FG (while admittedly not high, it's there)

    Yup. Fully agree.

Teams in this league are far too willing to give up safeties. They're also far too scared to kick FG's over 40 yards.

Giving up a safety is saying that you don't trust your D. Period. It was popularized by Wally, whom we all know was likely the worst game day coach in living memory. It almost always costs more than 2 pts.

The same idiotic strategy cost the Lions in the first half if I recall.

The only coaching strategy worse than intentional safeties is a Prevent Defense, which only prevents winning.

      IMO.

It was the right strategy a few years ago.

Then they made teams kick from the 25 instead o the 35.

Well, there are certain situations like that where I can see the logic in giving up the 2... say you're down 6, odds are even if you get the stop you give up a FG and being down 9 ends it, whereas down 8 you still have a chance... but down 2, there is just no point.

Early in the game maybe... 2 minutes left in the game, down 2, never IMNSHO

              Re: Strategy Question

If I was GM of a team, first thing I'd do is hire a probability guy.

I'd pay him $60,000 a year to hammer to the coach probabilities.

Football coaches are notoriously overly conservative.

90% of the time I would kick it away. If you give up the two and they drive for a TD (as Toronto did last night) you have a 9 point turn around. By giving them 2 you are removing the effort in getting the points. Several things can go wrong after the kick, Illegal block on the return, QB sack or a missed field goal.

I fully agree with this. I have hated giving up 2 points ever since Richie Hall used it twice a game, every game. And there was always the 9 point turn around.

                    Re: Strategy Question

That late in the game, I am kicking it away. IF you can get a good kick out of your kicker they are not quite in field goal range. You defense gets a quick 2 and out with little yards gained you get the ball back no points scored. Given the amount of penalties that are called on punts as well you could get even more yards on the kick. There are down sides of course. The first being that they drive and get a touchdown making it a 2 score game. The second being a field goal makes it a touch down to win scenario. The last one is that even if you get a stop with no points against chances are you are getting terrible field position (inside the 20 at least) with little time on clock. Now you do not need a touchdown to win, but having to go 50 or 60 yards with little time still very tough.

I was a little surprised by Hufnagels decision but the first thing that came to my mind was all of the 'moaning and bitching' there would have been if Reed had made such a call. The fact that Huf' did make the call just goes to show you that even the 'good ones' make mistakes...
