    Salary cap what salary cap?

    http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/200...ike/index.html

'Williams won't make all that much in Canada: Probably less than $200,000, with the potential for some substantial off-field income worked into the deal. But at least this will get him some cash.'

I guess the Argos will be releasing Arland Bruce, Damon Allen or any one of a number of their high priced defensive players.

I think John Avery would fit the bill to a tee...
Look. We can go round and round about this all the live long day. Let's keep it simple. I embody amazement. Can you dig on that? Good. Then meet me on the corner of rock and roll, and bring a flask of something that burns.

I wouldn't be surprised to see John released......no need to keep him on the payroll (IIRC this is the last year before his club option regardless) so perhaps the Seamen will trim his cost a year early to afford Ricky.....
Before you insult a man, walk a mile in his shoes. That way, when you insult him, you'll be a mile away, and have his shoes.

The Argos are unquestionably the top dog in salary cap abuse right now. Both the Eskimos and Riders have made moves to clear space. Argos have done nothing but re-sign their own players and are trying to add another guy who will probably get at least $250K by the end of the year.

Of course, if any other team in the league with a healthy payroll tried to sign Williams, they would be labelled a cheat. Since it is the Argos, it is viewed as "giving exposure to the league" or "everyone in the league benefits from Ricky being here" bull----. I hope the Argos sink in 2006.

Meh, as with the Esks in previous years.....I'd like some proof of salaries, not just assumed guilt based on conjecture.

Meh, I couldn't give a crap about the salary cap. Never really have. My only complaint about salaries with some teams (cough Argos cough) was that when push came to shove, the owner would bail and the rest of the league had to pick up the tab. Their new owners so far have paid the bills so let em spend, this year anyways. And I honestly don't think that Williams will get over $150,000. It's not like the guy has a lot of options available to him and his budgeting skills may even be worse than mine.

The argos don't have to cut anybody if they are only getting Spliffy Williams for one year. The SMS doesn't kick in until next year

Forgive my ignorance... but just who were all these moves the Riders made to cut salary?

Granted they may only need to cut 100K-200K, and not even for this year... but by my math I just don't see major savings after taking into consideration that someone else has had to come in.

Assuming new guys will earn roughly 60K a piece, as they're largely starters and that still below the average player salary, just off the top of my head these are the more major moves I recall...

All salary's originally stated by a Rider fan (Joshua) in this thread http://www.riderfans.com/showthread....field+contract

Nealon Greene gone (-150K)... Kerry Joseph in (+350K)... net result ~200K increase

Travis Moore out (-90K)... some younger guy in (+60K)... net result ~30K decrease

Daved Benefield out (-100K).... some younger guy in (+60K)... net result ~40K decrease

McCallum out (-110K).... some new guy (+60K).... net result ~50K decrease

Holmes out (-100K).... Armstead in (+130K).... net result ~30K increase

Then there was Thurmon, Gordon, Grant and Smith, whom from what I understand were all making ~60-70K, so whomever replaces them is going to make about the same.... but for the sake of arguement lets say the Riders save another 10K each.... net result ~40K decrease

From my count that leaves the Riders still spending ~70K more than they had last year

I would expect a vet in the secondary to get dumped this year but that would be offset by Curry's new contract. I wouldn't at all be surprised to see a higher payroll from the Riders this year. And to be honest, I don't really care. Every team, with the exception of Edmonton (I'm not sure how much salary you guys did cut, but losing Maas and Montford will shed salary), has added some salary this year. Some more than others, but it doesn't really matter until next year. You get what you pay for and I think the salary cap should be set as high as possible (without bankrupting franchises).

I'll have you know that I coined that word back in '60 (1960, as I know someone will ask). Anyone who claims otherwise is a liar.
