I'm surprised no one has mentioned how many times Davis was pushed from behind by his teammates when he was stalled by the defence. This is illegal. He was being pushed through piles.

He was also getting assistence before he hit the defenders. I think this is called Tandem blocking. His teammates were pushing him from behind.

It was very obvious they were guilty of this. It had to be in the game plan and the refs should have seen it.

There is a whole thread dedicated to this (pyramiding) on the other site you just joined.....I think it's all been said there, personally I don't think in over 25 years of watching football I've been at a game where this penalty has been called. what the hell is the signal for that one anyway?

Pringle's record will never be broken, IMO.

Records are made to be broken.

Sure it may take more then 13 years to break the record. With most of the teems in the league shifting to all out passing plays Ottawa still mantains a good balance between Josph & Ranek.

Ranek would be my choice to break the record. he plays similar to Pringle but has more moves and a bit more speed. on the other hand if Davis can keep having games like his last one he'll do it. And in less then 13 years

I think Jed is right......the circumstances would have to be perfect, especially considering how the CFL has really evolved far beyond the rushing attacks they used to employ in the 50's & 60's.....the CFL in general will never see those types of offenses that rely on run first philosophies unless it is as an exception to the norm. It is remarkable that Pringle was fortunate to play under a few teams that luckily used that line of thinking, let alone be good enough & durible enough to make this happen.....Reed's record has stood for 33 years already.....I won't say that this record by Mike will never be broken, but I think it to be very highly unlikely......

You don't see it much because the signal for it is quite complicated. First, three refs get on their hands and knees in a row. Then two more get on top of their backs...and then one more climbs to the top.

Are you really surprised? I think it's pretty safe to say that no-one commented on Davis being pushed from behind by his teammates, because that is pretty much *standard procedure* for every team in the league. I don't recall a game where a running back *wasn't* helped from behind by his teammates at least once. You see guys driving into that "pileup" to move it forward an extra yard or so all the time!

Indeed, I had forgotten it was even a penalty until you brought it up. The pushing from behind is called "Tandem Blocking" all right (as you mentioned), and technically involves a 10-yd. penalty. I've never seen that one called at all.

But surely you aren't suggesting he was "pushed" for 233 yards that night? Troy did it the way he always does: by his own efforts and the help of his O-line mostly. The extra yards here and there that he also picked up by being "helped" from behind was essentially no more or less than any other back receives in any given game. Sorry it bothered you so much.

Actually, it is called "Tandem Blocking" like Nanookster said.

"Pyramiding" is something different altogether. Remember the always-entertaining Leo Cahill when he coached the Argos in the 70s? That rule was brought in *specifically* to counter a "trick play" the Little Elf, Cahill, had tried when he was Head Coach of the Torotno Rifles of the old "Continental Football League" in the late 60s, prior to joining the Argos. He actually had his special teams guys climb on each other backs to form a pyramid and block an opponent's field goal!!! To the utter amazement of everyone watching! Up to then it wasn't against the rules, because no-one had ever thought of trying it! After that, just about every football jurisdiction (including the CFL) adopted a rule to specifically prevent such a "stunt" from happening again. Part of Leo's great legacy to Football history! Thanks for reminding me of that...

From what I've seen of Bradley he will very well become a star running back in the CFL. He's got moves, speed and power. Prety much an all-round RB.

Alot of people expected Pringle to break the rushing record early in the season. Now going into game 12 and with 116 yards left to go, Mike Pringle will need a break-out game to break it on Friday. Love to se him do it at home but I think he'll do it in the following game vs B.C.

George Reeds record has stood for 29 years (I think). Any way the question I ask is with guys the likes of Troy Davis, John Avery, Josh Ranek, and in future Mike Bradley. How long will Pringle's record be around for? With the yards Davis got in his last game I don't think it will last to long.

You're certainly entitled to your opinion, but I feel Pringle's record (once he actually gets it!) will stand for a long time to come. It will almost *have to* by default, as no-one else is even close to his totals right now, so it would take years for that alone. Much as I like Davis and Ranek, it is *way* to premature to even discuss them in the same sentence as Pringle! They both have a long way to go (years, in fact! ) in terms of production and durability to even get a sniff of the record yet.

They're both great backs right now, but let's face it: the career of an RB is often short. Not many *EARN* the right to play as long as George Reed (or Mike) did.

I'm honestly not quite sure how alot of people could have "expected" Pringle to break the record "early in the season", actually. He started the year with 832 yards to go to tie it, and even at last year's pace (which was 2nd overall in the CFL and good enough to make him a West Division All-Star) it would have taken 11 games for him to reach that plateau. He seems to be right in the ballpark by my calculator!?

Incidentally, it never ceases to amaze me how many Esks fans (I don't mean you, necessarily, cflnut) seem quick to dump on Pringle! You guys have the rare privilege of being able to see one of the greatest (possibly *the* greatest) running back to ever play in the CFL. And he's actually playing *FOR* your team instead of running all *OVER* your team like you and the rest of us have had to watch for years!! I say sit back, pop open a beer, and enjoy it!! It will be something to tell your kids about years from now...

Good posts GIH.................I'm really surprised that there is a penalty for that anyway.....since football has developed from Rugby (which I used to play BTW), that is common. When a player carrying the ball is stood up and in the grasp the other players have to "ruck over" which is essencially what they are doing here.....you continue to drive over top of the ball (you must release the ball when tackled) and your trailers are to pick it up at the back of the ruck. (This is different from the "scrums" that you will see to start some plays in rugby).
